As 2006 ends, I should really look back on the choices I have made in fashion and otherwise, but looking backwards only bums me out. So, as I think of the future, it brings me to Spring. I am totally stoked for spring clothes. Next season’s items will be awash in pinks, oranges, icy blues, and the always classic black and white combo.
Another trend I’m scared to death of totally looking forward to is voluminous skirts. Almost every designer had one flowing or bubble skirt in their line this season. And being a girl who thought she would grow up to be a princess in her childhood, I can honestly say, I LOVE FLOWY, but bubble skirts scare me. Don’t get me wrong: I love how they look on extremely tall models with legs for days, but being a girl that is barely 5’4″ and happens to have the shortest legs ever, bubble skirts make me look like a court jester. So, how do I wear volume without looking like the hired entertainment? I go SHORT. That’s right, as short as possible without looking like Britney Spears and her recent panty flashing disasters while experimenting with the mini. So it’s time to break out the Thighmaster, because short is in for Spring ’07.
Here’s a look at some of my favorite skirts from both the LA and New York Spring 2007 fashion weeks:
I tend to like the designers at LA fashion week more. Maybe because they are smaller designers or maybe because LA fashion week is more fun and risky than New York fashion week. I still love the classic styles of Oscar de la Renta and Michael Kors, but I can’t help but fall for the eye-catching colors and designs of designers like Heatherette and Betsey Johnson. I’m an 80s girl all the way, give me vibrant colors, asymmetry, short skirts, and leggings and I’ll go wild.
Puella was created by two friends Sarah Woodward Becker and Sarah Cius. They thought of the name Puella because it means “girl” in Latin. They’ve been around since 2003, but I just found them on 80spurple.com. Their clothes are girly and airy. The new spring clothes feature pastels and florals and have the perfect balance between fashion and function.
Puella can also be purchased at small boutiques around the U.S., Australia, and Japan and online at stores like Revolve Clothing, Azaleas, and Pink Mascara.
Start looking out for Proenza Schouler at Target.
Proenza Schouler is the fabulous brain-child of designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez and in January everyone will be able to experience their greatness. Soon Target will retire Behnaz from their GO International line and Proenza Schouler will be showing up. I’m extremely excited.
I’ve just watched The Devil Wears Prada for the hundredth time today, and I decided my favorite fashion quote of 2006 is:
Andy Sachs: “No, no, nothing. Y’know, it’s just that both those belts look exactly the same to me. Y’know, I’m still learning about all this stuff.”
Miranda Priestly: “This… ‘stuff’? Oh… ok. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don’t know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean. You’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar De La Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St Laurent, wasn’t it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of 8 different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic casual corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of stuff.”
If anyone has Livejournal, I just found an great group for all us fashion whores. It’s called YourLookBook. This community gives you a chance to share your favorite style icon with others and see who others are idolizing right now.
