I remember in the 90s colored jeans were all the rage. I’m pretty sure I had at least a green pair, a pink pair, and a red pair. I was pretty stylish for barely knowing how to pick out my own clothes (my mom dressed me well). Then all of the sudden I was sporting my green jeans and some girl in my class was like “eww, who wears colored jeans?” Well guess what random girl in my 4th grade class, I bet you’re going to be wearing colored jeans really soon, and I will be laughing inside knowing that I have my sweet revenge thanks to the trend cycle. I personally love wearing color, so why should I restrict the brights from traveling below the waist and above the ankle?
The first place I looked in my search for the cutest pair of colored jeans was Urban Outfitters. It seemed so obvious to me, but I can’t really understand why. I’m glad I visited their site though because they have tons of cute colored skinny jeans from Lux. The colors range from pastels to ultra-bright “technicolors”. I can’t get enough of the Lux Technicolor Skinnys in Kelly Green. They are almost in the blue family, but bold enough to keep all eyes on me. I also like the Lux Pastel Skinnys in Lavender. Wearing pastels on the bottom is almost wrong, but these jeans make it oh-so-right.
My next stop was Topshop. I never really think about Topshop when I’m searching for cute clothes online because it’s a UK based company, but I really like their stuff. I also giggled a little because they call jeans trousers. It reminds me of how people in the midwest say “pop” and the people on the east coast say “soda”, but I digress. Their Skinny Fit Trousers come in tons of super bright colors. I really want either the yellow or hot pink pair. For those who don’t want to stray so far from the normal jean, their Skinny Fit Trousers also come in cobalt. It’s bright, but not really out of the ordinary.
Finally, I decided to give Nordstom.com a little visit. I was bummed because they didn’t have any super bright jeans, but then I remembered that black and gray are technically colored jeans. I actually have black and gray jeans and I love them. Joe’s Jeans has a great pair of skinny jeans in gray and the best part is they’re called the “Chelsea” Stretch Jean. I love it when jeans stroke my ego. Nordstrom also has a super cute pair of black skinny jeans from Edun. Just like the Joe’s Jeans, they are stretch which is probably my favorite word when I go jean shopping.
Though I’m completely gung ho for colored jeans, I have a bit of advice. Don’t wear super bright jeans with a super bright top. If you do, someone might end up asking you to be the spokes person for Skittles. Other than that, have fun with it and don’t let them scare you because they’re only jeans for goodness sake.
Yesterday Blythe and I had a very interesting convo about the best jobs. We officially decided that the best job in the world is a mobile band tee display. For those of you who don’t speak bull-shit, that would be a professional band tee wearer. Sure there are models for print adds/web stores, but models don’t go on tour with them (just go with it). Since we practically live in t-shirts anyway, it would be awesome to tour with a band, and on a fairly shallow, pig-headed note, we have the perfect size boobs for tees (What!?). We figure if we are pitching this idea to bands which usually consist of all guys, adding something about our chest might distract them long enough to agree. This led me to think of the different types of band tees I could wear.
First there is the band tee for bands that are currently touring. That means any of the millions of signed and unsigned bands as long as they are creative enough to throw their band name on a t-shirt. I have mixed feelings about these shirts because I have “a thing” about paying to be a walking billboard. That’s why I will wear clothes from every other college but the one I attend. When I like a band I feel weird about plastering it all over my body unless I have to, or unless everyone else is doing the same (I can be a lemming sometimes). Fortunately, with my new highly necessary position, I can wear all the band tees I want and not feel bad because guess what, they’re paying me! There is a great band from Cali called Take the Crown and I absolutely love their Crown Skull Tee. I just like that it’s pink without being too girlie. I’m also a fairly big fan of The Used for various funny/odd reasons; one being I have a thing for stupid, dirty rockers. Their Green Machine Tee totally reminds me of the Hulk and Ninja Turtles joining forces to kick some major bad guy butt. I can be a five year old boy at times and the Ninja Turtles make me all giddy.
The next type of band tee is pretty much the opposite. These t-shirts are of bands that are broken up or no longer touring/making new music. These tees would normally be called vintage band tees, but I don’t like that because some of the bands aren’t so “vintage”. I guess it all depends on how you perceive vintage. For example, I love my Jimi Hendrix tee I got from the guys section at Target. I honestly wear it all the time. I also like the Beatles Sub Tee from Delia*s. When I think of the Beatles I think of my dad. He totally introduced me to rock music so this whole post is his fault. Lastly, I love love love the NKOTB Jordan Tee from Urban Outfitters. New Kids on the Block is the epitome of the boy band and I love them for it. Jordan was definitely my fave because he was a cutie, plus he totally tried to make a come back in the 90s. Comebacks Rule!
Finally, we have the t-shirts from people who aren’t in bands, but all the bands wear them. Anyone in Boston (and tons that aren’t) know about Johnny Cupcakes. All the t-shirts are super cute and have cupcakes somewhere in the graphic. I sort of love cupcakes especially the ones you get at Grand Central with the frosting in the middle, but I digress. It’s really fun to have food on your shirt that doesn’t leave icky stains that only Martha Stewart can get out. This makes the shirts from Johnny Cupcakes perfect especially the Elephant Shirt; who doesn’t want an elephant that shoots cupcakes out of it’s trunk? Another clothing company a lot of bands wear is Glamour Kills. They sponsor tons of bands and make awesome shirts. I was super stoked when I saw their King Dweeb Tee. I love the vibrant colors in the shirt and I’m the dorkiest kid you’ll ever meet (trust me; I quote Shakespeare regularly). I think I should suggest they make a “Queen Dweeb” tee. They could totally use my likeness.
Today marks the end of an era, at least for me. I’m sure this didn’t actually happen today, but it did happen in the recent past. Anyway, I read on Vogue.uk Hedi Slimane is officially saying goodbye to Dior. After rocky negations over his contract and reports saying he wants to start his own label, Dior and Slimane are parting ways to make room for a new creative director. Who will be the new creative director, you ask? Obviously it will be Kris Van Assche. LVMH has picked Assche to head Dior because of his extensive knowledge of the ins and outs of the company. Asscche previously worked under Slimane for about 7 years. According to WWD Dior wants a change in direction, but want to keep they’re heritage.
In my opinion, everyone always tries to change but stay true to their roots and that barely ever happens. I think if they are going to change directions then go all the way, and stop with all the timid baby steps. I loved Slimane’s out there style and will be sad to see him go. Buh-bye Slimane you will be missed (at least by some), and Assche you have so big shoes to fill. Not to intimidate, but the truth is all eyes are on you now Assche and I personally want you to succeed.
Anyone in my family can atest to my fairly strange obsession with FUSE. I will turn it on at 11 in the morning and let the TV watch me all day. I don’t truly care about the music videos, though I do like seeing Adam Lazzara and Frank Iero’s cute faces constantly basis. I just like listening to music, and the radio starts to piss me off after a while. I like top 40 to a point and then I start to wonder where’s all this other great music that may not have made the list?
I know your probably like, “Okay Chelsea, this is a fashion blog…”, but music and fashion mix so much I can’t even begin to explain it. Music shows up everwhere from the runway shows to inspiration for designers to musicians actually becoming designers. In an article I just read this on Style.com music and fashion collide in the form of a model also being in a band. The band is called Bloody Social, and is fronted by Calvin Klein model Jaime Burke (second from left). The article was about a recent show they had that was shut down because of noise complaints. I just thought that was really amusing and sort of bad ass. What made it even better was they not only got shut down, but they continued playing after the manager of the club tried to close the curtains to end the show. I don’t really think Jaime is unbelievablely cute, but that was totally a rockstar move. I also went to their MySpace to check them out, and they are actually really good. Give them a listen and if your in New York they are playing on April 9th and 19th.
My entire life I have had a love/hate relationship with sequins. Sometimes I completely obsess over them, but others I get those scary flashbacks of the sequin dresses my grandma used to wear with the giant dime size sequins. Though I’m fairly timid when it comes to sequins, I love things that sparkle (I’m like a ferret). When I see these fantastically gorgeous and shiny dresses everyone from Sarah Jessica Parker to Hilary Duff have been wearing, I get really excited and sort of scared. One good thing about sequins is when you have a sequin mini on, you won’t have to worry about flashing a little too much tush because the sequins weigh the dress down.
Life & Style Weekly has a spread in their April 9th issue showing six of their fave sequin looks. Obviously I love the blue Alice + Olivia mini. SJP always looks so classy and cute. I just want to live in her closet and fondle all her clothes. The gray Michael Kors dress that Eva Longoria has on is totally cute too, but I feel like it doesn’t really flatter her little figure. She’s like a mini bombshell and I like her in dresses that accentuate her curves. Hilary Duff’s gold Dolce & Gabanna dress has those ginormous sequins that make me want to hide under my bed or in SJP’s closet. I’m not really sure how much I like the dress, but there’s sort of an awkward beauty going on with Hil in that picture.
For this reason alone I may be investing in a super shiny sequin shift. I’ve had one too many accidental flashing inccidents. You can look just like Sarah Jessica (almost) because you can buy the fab Alice + Olivia dress at Shopbop. It comes in blue and silver/gold. There is also a sleeveless version in silver/white. I personally love the mini in silver/gold, but as cliche as it sounds the blue makes Sarah Jessica Parker’s eyes pop.
