Like the majority of my generation, I’m sort of a slave to social networking sites. For me though, its not as much of a meet new people to be friends with thing, its more of a “oh my, she has awesome style. I wonder where she shops.” kind of thing. One of the sites I’m on is called Buzznet.com. I’d describe it, but that’s not the point of the story. I saw this picture one of the creators took of Amy Winehouse’s shoes from Coachella, and I totally flipped. They are just mules, but I adore the comic book writing on them. It’s superhero chic, and who doesn’t want to be a superhero?
This got me thinking about how I love people who have a style all their own. It was great seeing crazy style choices from people like Mischa Barton, Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan, but all too soon these style choices became mainstream and everyone is dressing like them. When this happens I like to turn to indie style makers like Cory Kennedy, Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse. All of them have different styles, but their clothing choices are completely different from what the Hollywood girls are wearing. Its a breathe of fresh air. Check out some videos from Lily and Amy to see their very different styles:
Now that these ultra-stylish girls are sort of becoming well known, I know more and more people will copy their style. That means I’ll find new unique people to wonder where they bought their clothes, or better yet maybe I’ll end up as that person. Style is all about your personality right?
Chelsea Rae | FitFlops, Shoes | Tuesday, 29 May 2007
I’m an extremely lazy person. I used to be a cheerleader, and that’s how I got my workout. It was fun and didn’t feel like I was doing work; I’m not the type of person that willingly goes myself to the gym. Lately, the extent of my work out has been walking around NYC or the mall. Sometimes I even add extra difficulty by wearing heels instead of flats, but walking around New York in heels can be quite painful if your not careful.
Luckily, my problem may be solved. A UK based company has come up with a genius idea called the FitFlop. They are flip flops that work your legs and bum while you walk, and you don’t have to worry about killing your feet in heels. According to the website, “The FitFlop’s uniquely built multi-density midsole activates muscles midstep to help tone your thighs, your calves and your glutes. In fact, FitFlops are biomechanically engineered to absorb shock, lessen joint strain, and recreate the gait of barefoot walking - but with a powerful new built-in micro-wobbleboard workout-enhancing effect.” If these shoes work anything like squats on a wobbleboard, I am so in.
If you’re in the UK you probably already know all about FitFlops and exactly where to get them, but we in the US are totally out of the loop. Thankfully, Bath & Body Works has our backs. You can buy them online here for $39.95. Now if only there was a non-sports-sandal design, I’d buy one in every color!
EDIT: Bath & Body Works has sold out of FitFlops online, but here is a link to a list of all the Bath & Body Works stores that carry them (in limited quantities). Also Bliss online will begin selling them on July 13th, but I would suggst you pre-order them now because they are going quickly! We Wanna Know: How are you guys getting in shape for all those mini dresses and short shorts this summer?
Even though my style has always been a little more tom-boyish than most girls, I have always loved flowers and the color pink. Over the years I’ve gone through my dress like the guys stage where a couple pointless pair of Airwalk gym shoes came into play, but now I am more into mixing that bit of edge, that would normally be sved for boys, into an overall girlie outfit. Angelique, the owner of Angélique Boutique, makes perfect jewelry for any girl that is equal part sugar and spice.
Growing up in a family with a ton of thrift market whizzes has made Angelique the brilliant designer she is today. When Angelique was little, her mom and grandma would take her on their treasure hunts to tons of thrift markets, antique stores, and vintage fairs. She learned the value of little mementos others might pass over, and now uses this love for tiny treasures to create beautiful jewelry. Whether she is using a swashbuckling skull cameo or a beautiful set of floral beads, the essence of past fashionistas is definitely there.
I love shoes more than anything ever created (okay maybe except my cell, car, and computer). This isn’t just because shoes are a necessity, but because they are the perfect clothing item. Shoes can create height, perfectly shaped legs, and they will never make you feel fat. Saks Fifth Avenue obviously agrees with me because they are expanding the shoe section of their Manhattan flagship store to an entire floor, more specifically the 8th floor. That’s not even the best part. Not only will the shoes get their own floor, but that floor will be the first floor in US history to be granted its own zip code from the US Postal Service. The new zip code will be 10022-SHOE.
The expanded department will open in September for all of you shoe fanatics. I almost want to send the shoe department a thank you card for being totally amazing and so I can use their new zip code. I for one am overly stoked!
Gen Art is one of my favorite organizations because they are all about the unknown. If you haven’t heard of Gen Art before, you should Google them, but a brief explanation is they are an organization that showcases emerging fashion designers, musicians, artists, and filmmakers. I think its very important to bring in a fresh point of view to these small highly competitive worlds, and Gen Art is doing a great job. Gen Art Pulse, is a great blog sponsored by Gen Art and they have come up with a great idea to spotlight fresh t-shirt designers. Its called Free T-Shirt Tuesdays. Each week they feature a different indie t-shirt designer and give readers a chance to win one of their fantastic tees. All you have to do is write them an enthralling email about why you want the t-shirt and send it to editor@genartpulse.com. This weeks stellar tee is by Jason Laurits, the designer behind Plaster. Click here to read all about Jason, and if you scroll down to the end you can see the winning entry from last week!
We Wanna Know: Do you guys know of any great indie designers? We’d love to hear about them so shoot us an email!
Lately, celeb style icons like Lindsay and Mischa have been spotted wearing what some would call modern-day lederhosen. I personally think they’re more of suspenders. I’m not really a fan of shorts, so at first I was on the fence with this style, but it has grown on me. It’s a feminine twist on men’s classic, and I’m all for equal fashion rights. If guys can wear heels, then girls can wear suspenders. Right? They are also really versatile. You can wear them with a ultra girlie shirt like Mischa or channel Lindsay’s Coachella outfit by pairing it with a great tank. I would personally take the middle ground and pair the suspenders with a plain fitted tee.
If your willing to take a fashionable chance, Shopbop.com has three great pair of suspenders for you to wear however you see fit. You can look like an über-fashionable candy stripper in McQ by Alexander McQueen or like a total bad ass in Morphine Generation. If you want a more classic look, Lauren Moffat has the perfect suspender for you. Check out how shopbop has styled their suspenders:
We Wanna Know: Are suspenders a stroke of fashion genius, or a giant fashion no-no?
In fashion there is almost never one cut that works for everybody, especially when it comes to bottoms. Thankfully, at some point during fashion history, the fashion gods came together and created a skirt that not only looks good on every shape and size but will also work for every occasion. I bring to you the Little Black Skirt.
Its actually more like the swingy, knee-length, black skirt, but that isn’t as catchy. This cut flatters all figures from the pencil thin to the curvy. It’s looseness can give the illusion of amazing curves (if need be) and falls perfectly over Marilyn Monroe-worthy hips with out making you look like a über pear-shaped Russian nesting doll.
The skirt already has one plus in the perfect hip department, but the length of the skirt rounds out its perfection. Being a knee-length skirt it is demure but shows just enough leg to be sexy. It can also be dressed up or down and be worn during the hot and cold seasons. Though swingy skirts like this can be found in a variety of colors and patterns, black is the most versatile color. This skirt is a definite wardrobe staple; you can even hang it right next to your perfect LBD.
Mammoth, fit-your-life-in-it bags are everywhere these days and for good reason, but when you have large bags you are more inclined to throw everything you may or may not need into them. Carrying such large, chock-full bags all the time can cause back problems or a pricey, yet calming, massage habit.
If you’re looking ease the shoulder pain and still have an undeniably cute bag, clutches are for you. Many people still think clutches are solely for the perfect evening out with Prince Charming, but casual clutches are popping up everywhere. The best part is you won’t have to break the bank to buy them, unless you want to of course (Fendi here we come!). Many of the cutest clutches out there are under $150, and if you know where to find super-adorable cheapo clothes like at Forever21 and Old Navy, you will find they have clutches for less than $15. Though I adore the Fendi clutch, I could buy 85 Forever21 clutches for the same price or just one Forevs clutch and $909.20 worth of other sizzlin’ summer finds.
Ladies its time to save our shoulders; at least until the next time we need to stash a pair of shoes, sunblock, a make-up bag, 3 pairs of sunglasses, a cellphone, a camera, and whatever else our little hearts desire into our bag.
This weeks Life & Style Weekly is all about getting you ready for summer. Whether you’re trying to find the perfect fashionable tank or a great pair of sky-high platforms, they have you covered. Click on each page to see the details like what tank dress bothe Eva Longoria and Jessica Alba will be sporting this summer or what sizzlin’ summer flat is worth shelling out for because they make you feel like your sneakers. This issue is on newstands now so grab a copy if you want to see more summer trends.
I have been completely biased towards terry clothing. I thought terry should be banished to the realm of unfortunately tight jumpsuits with words like “HAWT” across the tush, but Juicy Couture, the leader in jumpsuit couture, has proved me wrong. Juicy has two darling terry mini dresses that are destined to make any terry-loathing fashionista swoon.
The Off-Shoulder Tunic Dress, has an amazing summer boho flair. It would be perfect with a wedge sandal or thong sandals similar to the ones the model is wearing. It’s also a great length to wear to an outdoor summer concert as long as you’re not planning on any crowd surfing, stage diving, or hardcore moshing.
The slightly shorter Eyelet Tank Dress is equally cute but for different reasons. Eyelets are everywhere this season, and obviously Juicy wasn’t willing to be left behind. This dress is perfect for a day shopping, a picnic, or even just lounging around. To make sure this adorable mini doesn’t give the people behind a good look at your “crime scene”, add a great pair of dark-colored short shorts underneath.
