Weitzman’s Glass Slipper

Chelsea Rae | News, Shoes | Wednesday, 31 October 2007

Stuart Weitzman - Cendrillon slipperI can’t lie, when I was a little girl I never fantasized about being Cinderella, not once. I couldn’t ever bring myself to imagine my parents dead and living with three women I detest, doing house work 24/7 (ouch!). That’s not to say I never dreamed about meeting Prince Charming and being swept off my feet, because I think that’s every girls dream (it could be Princess Charming if you wish).

If I ever had to be Cinderella, I would choose hot pink “slippers” instead of glass, but if I had to go with clear shoes, I would chose these shoes Stuart Weitzman designed.

The shoes are inspired by an upcoming opera being put on by the New York City Opera called Cendrillon. The opera is based on Jules Masset’s modern twist on the classic Cinderella. Stuart created the same modern twist on the classic glass slipper using clear vinyl and many feet of glow wire that lights up when you put the shoe on (there is a pressure switch in the heel). Its like the big girl version of those old school kicks, ‘LA Lights’ (they were all the rage in my 1st grade gym class).

Glass slipper wearing or not, you might be able to catch the New York City Opera’s Cendrillon for one of their eight shows playing until November 18th. To get ticket information visit www.nycopera.com.

Shoegasm of the Week: Becca Platform Pumps

Chelsea Rae | Shoes, Target | Wednesday, 31 October 2007

Isaac Mizrahi for Target - Becca Platform PumpsThe collaboration of Isaac Mizrahi and Target is perhaps one of the most influential collaborations of today. It marked the begining of the designer capsule collection craze, and is one of the longest running, if not the longest running, capsule collection out now (its been around since 2003). Since then, Isaac has been influencing the style of women from all over the US via the highly accessible Target line, which contains everything from home goods to shoes. This week, he made me swoon when we saw an adorable pair of pumps while browsing in the Target by my house.

The culprits of my recent lusts are called the ‘Becca Platform Pumps’. I initially went to Target last week to find some flats; due to a recent storm, I was in desperate need of some cheap shoes I could ruin, but instead of finding flats, I found these.

I probably looked like an idiot because when I saw them, I stopped extremely suddenly, and almost cried when I saw they didn’t have a pair in my size (I came back later in the week, and they were fully restocked). I probably would have also drooled over these 1940s-esque mary-janes with a sky-high heel, but I didn’t want to ruin the suede. I could just see myself wearing these on my upcoming birthday with a cute jewel-tone mini dress and black stockings. I’ve got the shoes, now all I have to do is find the dress!

Target is Ready for the Future

Chelsea Rae | Fall/Winter, Go International, News, Target | Tuesday, 30 October 2007

Target Fashion ShowWhen do runway shows get the attention of the non-fashion loving public? When they show is in Grand Central and completely holographic to boot. Every year mega retailer, Target, pulls a stunt to shock and awe, and each year they also try to out do their last stunt.

So far some of the cooler things the Target crew have come up with are buying all the ad pages in one edition of The New Yorker, and another time they had a vertical fashion show where the models walked down the side of 30 Rockefeller Plaza.

This year they are having a holographic fashion show for their fall/winter designer apparel, featuring such designers as Isaac Mizrahi, Liz Lange, Mossimo, and I assume Erin Fetherston, with Dominique Cohen Jewelry and sexy shoes from Hollywould. There will be no models and no clothing, per se, everything will be holograms projected in the beautiful Grand Central Terminal. This futuristic fashion show will take place next Tuesday and Wednesday, November 6th and 7th, every 10 minutes, and the video of the show will be posted on Facebook, YouTube, and the Target website.

Halloween, Celeb Style

Chelsea Rae | Celebrities, Fall, Halloween | Monday, 29 October 2007
Halloween costumes - Paris Hilton, Adrian Grenier, Nicky Hilton

Every year children get all dressed up as their favorite cartoon character, superhero, undead individual, etc, and go from door to door scavenging for candy. Like the children of the US, each year celebrities get dressed up for Halloween, but instead of gouls and Superman, celebrities go balls to the wall and most like to slut it up a bit (hmm, I wonder why young girls want to be a naughty nurse for Halloween).

The past week Paris Hilton has been spotted at least twice in her sluttiest trick-or-treatin’ garb and sister Nicky was seen slightly more covered at least once. They both attended the Halloween party at the Playboy Mansion, so I guess wearing clothes would have been a bad choice.
Rumer Willis and Jamie Lee Curtis pull out all the stops for the Dream Halloween AIDS Benefit. Doesn’t Rumer look classy tressed as a…ummm…something with only half of her skirt. Way to help support the Children Affected by AIDS Foundation!

Halloween costumes -Heidi Montag & Spencer Pratt, Rumor Willis, Jamie Lee Curtis, Avril Lavigne

Don’t worry girls, it wasn’t just the ladies who had some crazy costumes. Adrian Grenier scores a 10 in my book with his blue, ball-busting 80s leotard. Or maybe, I just can’t get over his good looks so he could have worn jeans and a t-shirt and he’d have been the winner.

I’ve only seen three celebs that actually look as if they could have gone trick-or-treating Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, must have gone to the nearest pop-up Halloween costume store, and it looks as if Spencer did actually dress up as his fave superhero (I like Batman better). Heidi was a mermaid, she looked sort of blah, but that’s okay because she’s with Spidey. My top choice for cheesiest costume is Avril Lavigne dressed as a…again its not obvious, and I’m too lazy to guess. What do you think she is, and what will you be wearing on Halloween?

Why Do Children Need Designer Clothing?

Chelsea Rae | News | Monday, 29 October 2007

Danielle Hall PhotographyLast week I read an article in The Wall Street Journal about girls being bullied in school because of the clothes they wear. The article, entitled ‘Fashion Bullies Attack — In Middle School’, begins with the story if a sixth-grader from Illinois whose mother dresses her in designer clothes, yet she gets bullied by the other kids because she is too dressed up and has no urban clothing items like Apple Bottom jeans and Air Force Ones. Of course, this isn’t fully representative of the youth of America. In many cases the opposite is true; girls are teased because they don’t have enough designer clothing items.

This was strange to me though, because when I was in elementary and middle school the extent of designer clothing needed was a Louis Vuiton logo bag, which I couldn’t and still can’t stand (sorry Marc).

Obviously, there were trends I completely bought into. Does anyone remember platform sneakers like the Spice Girls wore? I almost sprained my ankle multiple times on the playground because of those things. Then it was ultra wide bell-bottom jeans, 70s style. And, there is the ever present trend of buying your entire wardrobe from Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle, or Hollister, but I never fed into that because I couldn’t bring myself to be that much of a lemming.

My question is when did it become “cool” for girls who haven’t even gone through puberty to have a closet full of designer labels whether its Little Marc, Dolce & Gabbana, Baby Phat, or Apple Bottom. When I was that young, a pair of jeans were a pair of jeans, and the only thing I had to worry about was when I was going to get a pair of great boobs.

The Journal says this is due to designers targeting a younger audience, but at 10 or 11 I wasn’t buying my clothes. Perhaps we older women (moms, sisters, aunts, grandmothers) should take a step back. We’re the ones proliferating the who’s wearing who cycle and teaching it to the younger, more impressionable girls. Just because mommy buys a D&G dress, doesn’t mean the daughter needs one just like it for school. Perhaps, this is just a theory, we should stop giving the designer name so much clout. I know designer clothes are well-made (usually), but there is a difference between buying a designer item for its quality and buying it because it says Louis Vuiton or what-not.

What do you think?

Shoegasm of the Week: Agent Provocateur

Chelsea Rae | Agent Provocateur, News, Shoes | Thursday, 25 October 2007

Agent Provocateur ShoesInstead of picking just one shoe to fawn over this week, the salivating will be over an entire company. Agent Provocateur, the company known or making the sexiest and potentially most sought after lingerie, have teamed up with Kurt Geiger to create an 8-piece shoe line called Pure Sex.

Vogue.uk says the shoes ranges from “chic strappy court Belle to the hardcore over-the-knee, wet-look Carini boot”, that is, it ranges from or sexy to dominatrix, and nothing else would be expected from AP.

The shoe line was officially launched yesterday, October 24th with a dazzling party, but the hot shoes, which start at about $560, have yet to be released on the Agent Provocateur website, www.agentprovocateur.com.

Picture Post: Harper’s Bazaar Nov. 2007-Kids…

Chelsea Rae | Magazines | Wednesday, 24 October 2007

Harper’s Bazaar has been around for 140 issues, or 11 years and 8 months. So, they’re celebrating! The November issue has a Jennifer Aniston on its cover, and they have created yet another perfectly witty spread that people will be talking about for ages (remember the Simpsons/Linda Evangelista spread?). This one has the gorgeously underage Chanel Iman (I love her so much) posing with a bunch of kids dressed as our fave designers. The Kid Stays In The Picture

A Pop-Up Book for Fashionistas

Chelsea Rae | News | Tuesday, 23 October 2007

Neimen Marcus Pup-Up BookRemember when you were little, and the most interesting books were the pop-up books; it was like television for smart kids who liked to read. Now, Neiman Marcus is giving us fashionistas a way to go back to the wonderful days of nap-time, coloring books, and snacks with their very own pop-up book.

The Neiman Marcus Pop Up Book was created in celebration of Neiman Marcus’ 100 year history. The story follows a “young girl’s journey through Neiman Marcus from past to present”. If the story doesn’t interest you, its always fun to see the gorgeous, movable 3-D images.

You can get your copy of the Neiman Marcus Pop Up Book for $125 on the Neiman Marcus website.
