30 Items Every Woman Needs

Chelsea Rae Simmons | News | Thursday, 06 December 2007
Pink Rock Candy

I’m sorry for my absence lately, it’s finals time and I’ve been extremely distracted by the knowledge school will be ending soon. The end of the semester is always a bitter sweet time, because though school is ending, I also know this will put a definite damper the easy access social life you get while in school. But this is beside the point, I just read an article from timeonline.co.uk which lists 30 items every woman must have in her wardrobe. The 30 items are:

1. A clutch bag 11. A beret 21. A statement Necklace
2. A jewelry box 12. A little Black Dress 22. Jeans
3. Leather gloves 13. A Large Cocktail Ring 23. Kirby Grips (bobby pins)
4. A wide patent belt 14. A sequin bolero 24. Red nail varnish
5. A good pair of tailored trousers 15. A diamond ring 25. A blazer
6. Volumizing Mascara 16. A plain cashmere jumper (sweater) 26. A winter coat
7. A silk camisole 17. A pair of support knickers (supportive underwear) 27. Simple swimwear
8. A vintage brooch 18. One plunge bra/one seamless bra 28. A good hair dryer
9. Silk Slippers 19. Flat black boots 29. Silk underwear/nightwear
10. An Umbrella 20. Simple court shoes (practical shoes with a small heel, think The Queen) 30. A crisp white shirt

The list is great and all, but I can help think does this mean my life is incomplete without everything on this list. I don’t have a pair of flat black boots. I go to the store try on a ton of different pairs and then leave; I don’t like how they look on me. And, what about those items I have, but never wear and truly doubt I would ever wear, like court shoes. I have a pair, my parents bought for me so I would be comfortable walking around campus in heels, but if I’m going to wear high heels the heel needs to be at least 3 inches. I constantly forgo comfort for style, and that’s life.

Also, what about the things they left off. I think they should have a good pair of hair cutting scissors. I’m not suggesting you cut your own hair, but I always like to have a pair around in case I haven’t planned a hair appointment and there are a few split ends ruining my hair style. SNIP SNIP, and I’m on my way.

And, what about the basic t-shirt? I don’t think I could live without having a plain monochromatic tee; whether it happens to be in white, black, navy, eggshell, or whatever color, I think its a staple.

So my real question is, can you actually widdle all life’s “necessities” down to 30 items? What items would you add or subtract from the list?

  • I would add to the list: a roomy leather handbag for work, some great tweezers, a good pair of walking or running shoes, and double-sided tape. I would probably take off the list: red nail polish, a diamond ring, and silk slippers.

  • I didn’t even think about tweezers, but they’re definitely a necessity; and I agree with you about silk slippers. I don’t wear slippers normally so why would I need silk ones!?

Well, I would leave off the sequin bolero (I am 44 and those days are long gone) but I might replace it with a lovely sequined cashmere cardigan that will go with just about anything and dresses up a pair of jeans and t-shirt wonderfully.

I would add to the list one designer handbag that you LOVE in a classic style, and a wonderful body lotion that smells fabulous. And maybe for that over 40 crowd like myself, a great facial cleanser/moisturizer. I can’t live without it!

  • Besides the diamond ring and the sequin bolero, I’d subtract the red nail varnish and substitute a good buffing block (and nail trimmers/file). A natural, neat and clean manicure is always classier than nail polish, IMO.
