Chelsea Rae Simmons | Ad Campaigns,Spring/Summer | Tuesday, 01 January 2008
Pink Rock Candy, Marc by Marc Jacobs, M.I.A., S/s 2008 ad campaign

Now that it is officially 2008, it’s time to get back down to business. First of all, I hope everyone had a relaxing holiday and got the much some need rest (or was that just me?). To celebrate 2008 I think I will bring you a couple of my favorite infatuations for the new year, M.I.A. and Marc Jacobs. Marc Jacobs because his Spring/Summer 2008 collections really riled the fashion industry up, and M.I.A. because I just bought Kala, and there are a couple of songs that are so boss (“Come Around” anyone?). In light of all of this I give you the Marc by Marc Jacobs S/S ’08 ad campaign photographed by Juergen Teller.

I have mixed feelings about the campaign. The look isn’t really M.I.A., especially in the first shot, and she looks as if she has bathed in a while. I feel like Marc is still on the “stop taking life so seriously” trip, and M.I.A. is the perfect person to represent that. Perhaps, I’m giving MJ too much credit, and this is just a terribly weird, greasy ad campaign.

How do you feel about the MJ/M.I.A. combo, and what do you think of the ad campaign?

Unfortunately, I don’t think the ad campaign is realistic. She’s beautiful, and the clothes are beautiful, and the lighting is a lovely shade of Marc by Marc Jacobs, but the styling is far, far too 1980s menswear and, perhaps it’s a play on gender roles, but I’d love to see MIA in something entirely feminine as she attempts to dominate a male-ruled genre like hip hop/rap, you know?

    Maybe it’s just me. =)

I’m so glad to see you post again! We’ve missed your wonderful articles!

    xoxo.

  • It does feel extremely 80s and quite unrealistic, but I think I just chucked that up to be part of the surrealistic nature of the ad campaign. Again, I may be reading into things way to much!

And, I’m glad to be back. I feel as if I’ve been gone forever!

  • I love the ads and Marc for putting M.I.A. in them.
