I’m Conformed: Leopard Print

Chelsea Rae | Dresses, Magazines, Spring/Summer | Monday, 24 March 2008

Pink Rock Candy, pinkrockcandy.net, Vogue Paris, April 2008, Sasha P

The fact that I’m beyond stoked about the season Premiere of The Hills tonight does not discount my disdain for the number of “celeb” clothing lines coming from the girls of the show. Though I will admit the girls tend to dress well, exhibiting a SoCal comfort many girls like to mimic, but considering I live across the country from California I’ve chosen not to be sucked in to the “dress the girls of The Hills” phenomena and instead fall for another overly used trend.

I’ve finally fall prey to the animal print phenomena (no pun intended). This however will only happen in the form of cute leopard flats or this gorgeous Dior dress Sasha Pivovarova is wearing in the April 2008 issue of Vogue Paris

I’m sure I will never actually buy a pair of leopard print flats, but if someone decides to buy them for me, I’ll consider wearing them.

The dress, on the other hand, I would give anything to be able to spend my well earned money on, but unfortunately I’m too afraid to even try to figure out the cost because I know it would just ruin my “I did fantastically on my midterms” mood. If, by some mystical force, I were to get my hands on this dress, I would wear it everyday and risk being talked about. I would also eat all my vegetables and exercise, in the hope that one day I would grow up tall and slim like Sasha— look at that girls waist!

Spring into a New Step

Chelsea Rae | Spring/Summer | Friday, 21 March 2008

Pink Rock Candy, pinkrockcandy.net, Harem Vintage - Marie Claire IT Oct 2002

It’s officially Spring, and I must say, FINALLY! In literary terms, Spring usually signifies the birth of a new person (metaphorically of course) or a chance to start fresh. This is not only because the flowers are beginning to bloom and the dead ground is coming back to life, but because of the numerous cleansing spring showers. In the spirit of Spring, I decided I wanted to start fresh. Create a new Chelsea for Spring.

I pretty much take the opportunity to change a bit at every turning point holiday/event (New Years, Spring, My Birthday, etc.), but I’m not sure I ever change much. Sure I’ve developed pricey green tea habit since the on set of 2008, and last Spring I bought a plethora of leggings (Trend follower? Me? Never…) We always have a grand idea of the person we want to be, and how we want to appear to ourselves and others, but when we look in the mirror have we actually changed? It’s so hard to tell.

I know what you’ll all say, “just be happy with yourself,” good advice, sure enough, but I bore easily and creating different characters to play if only for a moment using fashion, beauty, art, writing, music, or whatever medium you’d like is just so much fun.

So, for Spring I’d like to: find the perfect brown platform sandal (lofty right), start listening to more new bands (any suggestions?), not give into the colored wayfarer trend, cut back on the number of fashion magazines I buy (probably not going to happen, but the habit is getting expensive), and dress more like a flapper/hippie/harem girl/grandpa. So there you have it, my random Spring goals which may or may not transform me into a person slightly different than I am now.

What are you going to do for Spring?

McQueen Got My Hopes Up

Chelsea Rae | News | Wednesday, 19 March 2008

Pink Rock Candy, pinkrockcandy.net, Alexander McQueen

I was almost just really stoked. Everyday, I get a slew of fashion newsletters sent to my mail box, and lo and behold, the subject line in most of them reads something like “McQueen to Show in New York”. My first thought is, “WHAT!” Then I click on the pretty little bad news bearing link.

Yes, Alexander McQueen will be showing a collection in New York, but it won’t be during New York Fashion Week in the fall. It will be next Wednesday, March 26th, at Milk Studios. McQueen has decided to do an edited 20-piece fashion show of his Autumn/Winter 2008 collection. “Okay,” you think, “that sounds interesting,” and I’m sure it will be fun for the 120 clients and press who are invited.

I loved the A/W 2008 collection, and hate to say anything bad about Alexander McQueen because I think he’s a genius, but if you really think about it, the majority of the “clients and press” have already seen the show either first hand in Paris or over and over again as they flipped through the pictures of it. Iknow pictures aren’t the same as seeing the clothes first hand, but and “edited version” is the same as the entire collection either, so why would they want to go to an edited version of the same show, just to bask in the fantasia that is A. McQ?

Actually…

The DOs and DON’Ts of St. Patrick’s Day

Chelsea Rae | Think About It | Monday, 17 March 2008

Pink Rock Candy, pinkrockcandy.net, Sexy Leprechaun costume

Last night on the way to get pizza…

Dad: Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Me: St. Patrick’s Day’s on Monday…
Dad: Oh, I thought it was today. Wasn’t the parade today? Are you going to the city to party?
Me: Yes and no.
Dad: Why not? Don’t you want to party and get drunk like all the other college students?
Me: No. Why would I want to go to the city, sneak into a bar filled with people dressed in all green and a “Kiss Me I’m Irish” stickers on their forehead (when they probably aren’t) and get so inebriated I can’t even find my way back to Grand Central? It’s a waste, and I would much rather do other things, like spend money on clothes instead of beer.
Dad: *starts singing Aerosmith’s “Jaded”* (he’s a total spaz but I love him)

I swear I’m not really the St. Patrick’s Day grinch, but there are some traditions which happen to go along with this holiday that are really annoying. Anyway, if you do happen to head to your local (or not so local) bar today, be safe and don’t wear an entirely green outfit. To be honest, sometimes even a bright green shirt is too much.

So, if you do want to be festive here’s a few hints:

  • DON’T wear too much of the bright St. Patty’s Day green and if you must wear a green outfit, make sure it doesn’t make you look like a leprechaun. The best green outfit would be one that would pass if you said, “oh, it’s St. Patrick’s Day? I totally forgot. It must be my lucky day!”
  • DO go for something small like turquoise accessories (everyone will be too drunk to complain about the off hue) or other green accessories.
  • DO line your eyes with green eyeliner and maybe add a tasteful green eyeshadow, that means don’t pull out the shadow with giant sparkles or your deepest hunter green caked on up to the brow. (DON’T wear both green make up and a green outfit)
  • DO use a play on words, and instead of wearing the color green, pick something eco-friendly. Everyone’s “going green” now, so it isn’t really hard to find if your in a day-of pinch.
  • DO wear whatever color you want, and go around insisting that color “is the new green” and then buy the querier a beer.
  • DO listen to lots of Dropkick Murpheys and Flogging Molly songs (do this anyway because these two bands are so fresh!)
  • DON’T, for any reason short loads of money, *ahem* green, wear a sexy leprechaun outfit. Just, don’t…

Win! Win! Win!

Chelsea Rae | Contests | Saturday, 15 March 2008

Pink Rock Candy, pinkrockcandy.net, Temposhark T-shirt contest

Everyone likes to win things. Whether it’s a piece of candy while playing BINGO in class or millions of dollars from the lottery, it always feels good to win. So I bring to you, lovely readers, two contests you can win. One will let you show the world your artistic genius, and the other is for the shopping obsessed mob who can put a sentence or two together.

The first contest is for those who have a knack for art. To celebrate the release of their upcoming album, The Invisible Line (March 25), Temposhark is looking for someone to design a t-shirt for there upcoming tour. The 10 best t-shirt designs will be presented to the guys and they’ll choose the winner. If you do happen to win, not only will your shirt be seen on thousands of screaming girls, but you will get $1000 dollars and a bunch of Temposhark goodies including 2 tickets their concert (you choose the venue), their entire CD catalogue, and 5 t-shirts including a signed version of the tee you designed. Want some more incentive? If you don’t win but your design is chosen to be in the top ten shirts, you still get prizes. I know, it’s awesome!

If you’re up for it, get busy because the contest ends March 31st. You can enter your design by going to designbyhumans.com/temposhark (scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page).

Pink Rock Candy, pinkrockcandy.net, Diane von Furstenburg - Women You Love contestNext up is a contest for Diane von Furstenburg. Let me say it again, Diane von Furstenburg! March 8th was International Women’s Day, of which Diane is a giant advocate. So, in the spirit of IWD, DVF (whoa lots of letters) has launched a contest asking people to write an essay about the woman or women that inspire you in any and every way. There’s no word limit or restrictions on who you write about as long as it’s a real person and you can provide a picture!

The grand prize is a trip to NYC, a $5,000 shopping spree at the DVF flagship store, and 2 tickets to the Spring 2009 DFV fashion show. I’m not sure which prize I’m more excited about. If you’re not chosen to be the “grand prize winner, there are other prizes you can win including those for “Most Viral” (make sure to tell everyone about your entry, leave it in a comment if you’d like and I’ll vote for you!), “Reviewer and Voter Sweepstakes” (meaning you can win for just voting!), and “Sign-Up Sweepstakes” (sign-up for the DVF newsletter). The contest ends April 19, 2008 at 11:30 PM (PST). For details on the prizes, rules and regulations, and how to enter head to inside.dvf.com/womenyoulove.
