Feathered Dreams
![]() |
Ever since I was little, or when ever the Disney movie came out, I wanted to be Pocahontas. My parents bought me the cassette, yes, cassette, of the soundtrack and I would listen to it every night while I tried to go to sleep— I don’t think I ever made it past “Just Around the River Bend”. This little Pocahontas obsession has been in remission until recently when I saw pictures of Mary Kate wearing a feather headband, I think they were in Nylon a while back. Since then, I’ve been contemplating ways to make my own feather headband, and I just recently completed my mission.
The headband doesn’t really say Pocahontas, it kind of says “I’m a flapper”— but, flappers are definitely up there on my list of things I want to be, among hippies, pirates, old school groupies, and princesses.
I made it using an old headband, some ribbon, a feather patch, and some gorilla glue (I couldn’t find my glue gun). I just wrapped the ribbon around the headband and then slapped on the feathers. It sounds very nontechnical, and that’s because it was. The process was a very macho, fix it with duct tape, rub some dirt in it kind of thing, but it turned out very pretty and girlie. I’ve worn the headband with pretty much every hairstyle I have in my arsenal, and it works really well with everything, though because I have a side part, I do like it better when the feathers are on the side with no bangs.
If you want to see more feather looks, lc from Fops and Dandies just bought a really cute feather crown looking headband, that is much more Pocahontas-y than mine, or you can just etsy search feather headbands.
p.s. Since I’m name dropping bloggers, I just met with Secretista (if you haven’t visited her blog do it!), because we go to school together, and were starting this super-semi-secret project on campus that I think will be really fun, but a lot of work. I’ll tell you more about it when things start falling into place (I don’t want to jinx it), but what would you suggest as a good way to find people who are interested in fashion on a college campus (other than facebook)?

AIIII AIII AIII AIII (supposed to be a Native American calling)—haa
Yea, I forgot to tell you your feather was HOTT!! Oh, and so are you ;). I saw some, um, ‘thuggish’ guys checking you out near Maui Taco.
I’m jealous that you are able to DIY. I lack arts and craft skills :(.
It’s really cool that you and Secretista go to school together! Love the headband by the way, definetly agree with you that flappers are so great.
Secretista:
I only am semi-crafty, which means I can color, glue, and knit a mean scarf in 3 months. I don’t usually pay attention to ‘thuggish’ guys, but they can look all they want…haha!
Jill:
I actually just met Secretista today, and she’s really really cool. We’ve been online friends for a little while though.
I love your DIY project, the end result is fabulous. I’ve always wanted to be a flapper, too!
WOO! I’ve got 6 names (including us). Oh… the works of Facebook.
…wait… YOU KNIT?!?!? I wanna learn and you’re gunna teach, thanks.
Poster Girl:
Thanks, I’m glad this DIY project turned out cute, because most of mine end up terrible and are tossed somewhere into the depths of my closet. And, Flappers are so cool!
Secretista:
I’m doing a 6 name dance right now (or at least and us +4 dance). It will totally be ten before we know it! When I remember how (I’ll just ask my sister for a refresher) I’ll teach you to knit.
Woohoo! 10 people!
Sweetie,
I stalked your aim or phone?…like 3 hours ago.
10 people = jumping for joy, and it was so funny when you stalked my phone, at first I thought it was this guy I’m avoiding, but the I was relieved to see your sn.
awesome diy! this is really cute & fairly simple to do
xoxo
Thanks Lauren! It was really easy, especially since I’m fairly inept when it comes to DIY.
I love it, it’s adorable. I have seen similar fascinators on Etsy but yours is really lovely….
I wrote about the feather headband trend that was all over SXSW! here–> http://www.amaterialworld.net/2008/03/you-know-those-feathered-hairclips-i.html
but…I like your flapper version MUCH better than the Pocahontas style. Way to go, miss DIY chic!
Oh wow, I love this headband. I like that it goes all the way around and it’s not just a clip.
Vain & Vapid:
I was actually thinking of buying some of the headbands off etsy, but I went this route first. I might still buy one that wraps all the way around my head from etsy, but who knows!
Material Girl:
I remember reading that post, it was the reason I headed over to etsy to check out some of the headbands. I think I still might want a Pocahontas-y one though.
aziza:
Clips always fall out of my hair, or I end up fidgeting with them, so that was definitely out of the question. I’m glad you like the headband though!
