Superheroes and the Costume Institute Gala
This year, for me, the Costume Institute Gala is less about the gorgeous gowns and suits everyone was bound to wear, but being that it had a Superhero theme, I was excited about the vaguely superhero costume. Not everyone knew how to translate this theme into a coordinating ensemble, and that’s okay, but I decided to show you my top picks out of those heroic and villainous individuals who went succeeded in this super feat.

My Top 35 favorites
- Karl Lagerfeld: Let’s just face it. KL is the only person that is a real live superhero, at least I know he’s my hero. The people he dressed were some of my favorites, an he wore a glitter suit jacket, come on!
- Anna Wintour in Chanel Haute Couture: If I were to give Winny a super power, it would be having the power to make people’s ears bleed with her siren scream because they botched a run through, and having heat vision. Come to think of it, she might already have these powers!
- Zac Posen and Kate Mara in Zac Posen: These two might not have gone the way of wearing clothes with shapes reminiscent of everyone’s favorite comic book heroes, but the colors they wore screamed, superhero.
- Max and Lubov Azria: Max is obviously a fan of then “Man of Steel” and Lubov added a cute comic book touch to her Herve Leger bandage dress. That’s how you work a theme without looking as if you’ve dressed for Halloween!
- Natasha Voinovic in Alexander Wang: Leave it to Alexander Wang to create the most wearable, vampy super-outfit of the bunch. Natasha could go straight to some disco after the Gala, and she probably did!
- Caroline Tretini: I’m not sure who she’s wearing, but her dress looks like something Poison Ivy would wear except in black.
- Daphne Guinness and L’Wren Scott: Both Daphne and L’Wren look like sexy evil villains who got dressed to go to some ball, hmmm.
- Rachel Bilson in Calvin Klein Collection: I haven’t yet decided if Rachel’s dress is more reminiscent of a black version of Aquaman’s wet suit or Iron Man’s robot suit. Either way, she’s totally ready to protect and serve!
- Victoria Beckham in Giorgio Armani: If her outfit doesn’t scream EVIL VIXEN GONE GOOD, I’m not sure what does. It’s like when Batman dated Catwoman, but her evil urges (isn’t that a song) couldn’t be suppressed.
- Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen in Diane von Furstenberg and Christian Louboutin: I know this is three people, but in the picture they’re perfect together. The two Olsens look almost undead/robotic which should inspire comic book writers to make a comic about them, and Christian is just out of this world and could be on just about any list I make.
- Lake Bell in Balmain
- Andre Leon Tally and Venus Williams in Giorgio Armani and Carolina Herrerra, respectively(both in a cape!)
- Raquel Zimmerman in Thakoon
- Guinevere von Seenus and Celia Dean in Rodarte
- Wendi Murdoch in Christian Lacroix
- Karen Elson and Jack White in Marc Jacobs
- Hilary Alexander in ?
- Naomi Watts in ?
- Michelle Monaghan in ?
- Jessica Stam in Proenza Schouler
- Christina Ricci in Givency
- Amber Valleta in Atelier Versace
- Dr. Lisa Airan in Rodate
- Michelle Trachtenberg in Vintage YSL
- Tom Welling in Ralph Lauren Purple Label (he plays a superhero, so…)
- Diane Kruger in Alberta Ferretti
- Barney’s New York’s Julie Gilhart in Rogan
- Laura Remmington Platt in Atelier Versace
- Diane von Furstenberg
- Kate Bosworth in Chanel Haute Couture
- Anna Sui
- Doo-Ri Chung
- Charlotte Gainsbourg in Balenciaga

Top 10 Honorable Mentions
- Thandie Newton in Chanel: She was almost there with the lacy cape and romper, but something was not quite superhero. Maybe she needed a mask!
- Kate Moss in Stella McCartney: Miss Moss looked a little less Hero than she did Grecian deity, though I think she was going for a Valkyrie look.
- Giselle Bundchen in Versace: Ahh, another Valkerie gone flat. I love the cutouts and she looked marvelous, but I wouldn’t want her to come to my rescue if Metropolis was under attack.
- Mischa Barton in Missoni: I’m not quite sure what her angle was, but she looked gorgeous none the less. Maybe she was trying to play up the broad super-shoulders except with an ethereal flair
- Katie Holmes in Girorgio Armani: She’s really working the shimmer and bright colors look, check out the neon blue shoes peeking out, but it was her helmet like hair that was very reminiscent of The Juggernaut from X-Men. She’s on the list by default though because that’s her normal hairstyle.
- Maggie Gyllenhaal in Peter Som: With the feather in her hair, she looked a bit like a flapper, but she was really trying with the bright blue thrown into the purple dress. She looked a bit more like a princess than a superhero though.
- Jourdan Dunn in Peter Som: I’m not sure any real superhero would wear this many feathers, but I like it. She could at least be a sidekick!
- Blake Lively in Ralph Lauren: It’s the feathers again. This time it’s a bit more down played, and she kind of looks a bit like a evil vixen, if that’s at all possible coming from Lively.
- Sarah Silverman in Dolce & Gabbana: She may be wearing polka dots, but look at the extension of that back leg. She’s totally getting ready to fly!
- Jason Lewis in Dolce & Gabbana: Okay, he’s not exactly wearing tights, but he could be any superheroes alter ego— you know, the good looking rich, Sex and the City hottie, ahem, I mean play boy.
