Getting Dressy for Memorial Day

Memorial Day is in a little less than a week, and though this holiday doesn’t really effect my day to day life, I always look forward to times when my family can relax, chat, and eat my dad’s amazing grilled food, no gas grills please, I love carcinogens! Memorial Day also gives me the chance to go shopping, because new outfits always seem to be necessary for each holiday, though that could just be me rationalizing my desperate need to go shopping. Times like these call for the perfect spring dress that isn’t too dressy, since you’re just with family, and isn’t too slouchy, because you never know who’ll drop by!
My first stop when looking for clothes online is always the Forever 21 website. I never have much money to blow, and at Forevs I might just stumble on a knock-off that I didn’t actually know was an exact replica of some designer item, and then perhaps someone will pass me on the street and ask “Is that (INSERT DESIGNER)?” and I’ll say, “Err…Sure!” but that’s beside the point— I swear warm weather makes me go on tangents. I can’t help but love this ‘Spring Flower Chiffon Dress’. Its a bit Little House on the Prairie, except more revealing, and the fact that there’s no empire waist in sight is a breath of fresh air— I’m tired of looking like a doll.
My only problem with this dress is, it has an exposed hem. I’m not sure if I have a complete loathing for exposed hems or if Forever 21 just makes cheaply constructed clothes which in term makes me dislike their slightly deconstructed hems. Actually, it’s probably both.
The other dress I like is from Urban Outfitters, and is called the ‘Sparkle & Fade Parfait Slip’. It’s less prairie girl and more laissez-faire bohemian, but it fits my personality none the less. I would most likely wear it just like the model, because in my world hoodies pretty much go with anything…pretty much. The only problem with this dress is, I think it’s completely shear, considering it’s a slip, which means I’ll have to get something to go under it.
What are you going to do/wear for Memorial Day?

I’m really into 1930s dresses right now so I have some old vintage patterns that I’m making. I first got the idea from a Yoana Baraschi dress that I am obsessed with. I’m thinking about using some great yellow and grey fabric if I can find something on purlsoho.com. I have a tendency to go for some vintage-y styles, so this is perfect for me. I’m also pretty obsessed with art nouveau again so I’m looking for some inspiration with that. Yeah that’s my Memorial weekend plan.
Carrie:
I wish I could sew, that would make my life so much easier. I would no longer have to depend on hunting for that perfect dress, because I could just whip it up.
The dress sounds so fabulous— when you finish, put it on your myspace and let me know because I’d love to see it, and then I’ll be really jealous…ha ha
Have a great Memorial Day weekend!
