They Can’t Rock It Like Iman
![]() |
There are things about the fashion industry that still make me scratch my head. Why can’t short girls become super models when half the time people like Mary-Kate and Ashley look just as good in designer clothes as most models— there is a little process I like call hemming. Also, why are most women’s wear models barely women? Everyone wants fresh-faced models, but if I were a casting director I’d want experience. As gorgeous as young models like Lily C, Daria, and Stam are, they can’t touch models with experience like Kate and Iman.
I was scrolling through Fashionista yesterday and I ran into this editorial of Iman from the Spring/Summer 2008 issue of VS. magazine. At first I though they were shots from the Italian Vogue, but I was disappointed— I can’t wait to see them! I wasn’t disappoint, however, with the editorial itself. I have always thought Iman was gorgeous, but she looks extra-fabulous in this spread. What really struck me, though, was the poses.
I realized I rarely ever see our new group of “top models” really posing, unless you count jumping a thousand times a pose. Every pose Iman hit was slightly contorted and awkward making each picture a gorgeous piece of art. I really wish the art of posing would come back— Benny Ninja, stop screwing around with those top model wannabes on ANTM and start working with the girls who are actually getting face time in magazines and ad campaigns, PLEASE!
I’ve also decided I really need, as in will die without, the entire look on the left. One day, I’m sure I’ll look back and think. What the hell was I thinking when it comes to my new found tribal phase, but for now I’m in lust!

Iman is definitely a classic.
I’m liking the editorial!
I’m always telling my friends there are “supermodels” and plus-size models, so why aren’t there pint-sized models?! I think part of the “barely women” phenom we’re seeing is b/c most designers are gay men. Honestly, when more designers were straight men (historically) we had ridiculous clothes and styles, but they were all about emphasizing women’s natural curves (extreme low cut blouses, tiny waists and ginormous hips). So the vision in vogue right now is that of homosexual men, who let’s face it–their fantasies aren’t about women looking sexy!
Oh and very cool on your brother to get to help dress him. I have hope for boys everywhere!

iman definitely still has it. i agree, i get tired of the hunched over couture poses, this is much more captivating and interesting to look at. & I’m interning at a modeling managementcenter and trust me it frustrates me to no end how girls shorter than 5′8” are left for commercial & print work. :/ most celebrities aren’t model height & they can rock the clothes, so why can’t us normal sized girls?

I love Iman in general, the work she does both in the industry and otherwise. I agree with you that these pictures each have something a bit strange, that looks great. I don’t understand why pretty much all the models now have the figure of a 7 year old boy, especially because most designs look better with curves. I myself don’t have great curves, but the fact that they are using some of these women to sell the clothes puzzles me.

Sally Jane:
Totally, and she’s a classic in the best sense possible!
Secretista:
I’m glad I’ve pleased the Secretista. Can we put Iman in our 90s-themed issue?
The Clothes Horse:
Good point… I love my gay designers, but they need to start think more like straight men when it comes to model body type! I just dressed my brother for his senior pictures— I must say, I did a damn good job! :b
la petite fashionista:
Exactly! I mean, MJ put Dakota Fanning in his ads a few years ago, and she for sure wasn’t and isn’t over 5′8″. I think people should expand their horizons and start casting short people. By the way, that’s so cool that you work at a model management company!
Jill:
Its so annoying when you see a dress on a tall, rail-thin model and then you try it on, and the dress is way too long, and looks funny because you actually have a chest.
…or is that just me?
