A Little Gauche Never Goes Out of Style

Pink Rock Candy, Marc Jacobs Fall 2008 Necklace

When it comes to fashion there are tons of things I’m afraid of: never getting the chance to wear a pair of Christian Louboutins, owning and then ruining a pair of Loubs, wearing a mini dress that is a little too mini, having platform gym shoes come back into style, bright orange fur coats, and even shorts, but one thing I definitely not scared of is a little bit of eccentricity and gauche. That’s why I’m in raptured with this necklace from Marc Jacobs.

Marc’s fall 2008 jewelry collection is primarily silver and pearl, two of my favorite things, and the over-sized pendant is not only à la mode, but the horn shape makes the pendant classic, simple, and elegant. I adore the way the cold looking silver mix with the pearl to create the perfect dichotomy of modern and vintage.

Though, I do have to say I wasn’t quite as in love with the actual collection— pastel, robe-esque coats and fluffy headbands don’t really do it for me— I do fancy almost every piece of jewelry, from the colossal necklaces to the incongruous cocktail rings.

I’m not quite sure how much this necklace costs, so I’m going to assume that its one of those ‘if you have to ask, you can’t afford it’ type of things. I do think, however, I might be able to afford one of the geometric broaches which could be parlayed into a cool hair accessory if need be.

What are your fashion fears and what jewelry trends are you looking forward to this fall?

2 Things For Fall

Chelsea Rae | Fall/Winter, Pants, Think About It | Thursday, 28 August 2008

Pink Rock Candy, Chelsea Rae

There are two things every girl needs this fall. I know what you’re thinking. “Just two? I started writing my back to school wish list on February and haven’t stopped writing since!” But, I’m stripping things down to the bare necessities, and it would take forever to type my fall 2008 wish list. So, the first thing we all need, for this fall and all falls to come, is the perfect pair of jeans. Even if you happen to be one of those people who never wear pants and only own legs because some of your skirts show a little too much of your assets, jeans are a definite necessity.

If you’re into longevity, go for the tried and true boot cut jean. They basically make everyone look amazing, especially when in a darker denim. These are the type of jeans that will last you through many seasons, so it’s best to buy the best quality boot cut jeans as you can afford.
Try: Marc by Marc Jacobs ‘Angela’ Bootcut Jeans, $188

If you want to seem of the moment head to your local H&M, Topshop, or Forever 21 and snag a pair of skinny, boyfriend cut, or wide leg jeans. Sure, jeans should be an investment, but when they might go out of style in a matter of months it’s much more cost effective to purchase from lower-end stores.
Try: The Forever 21 Jeans Shop

If you want to be really ballsy or are a fixture on The Sartorialst, you can go out and find what I like to call the drop-crotch jeans, but others will be a bit more PC and refer to them as jodhpurs or Sahara pants— but these aren’t usually found in denim. I personally would rather not have to walk around wearing a sign saying privates may appear lower than actually are, so I’ll stay away from this style.
Try: ‘Mary Meyer’ black sahara pant, $115 from Oak NYC

The second thing we all need is to stop saying “Fierce!” It was great when Christian Siriano started calling everyone a fierce tranny, but when exactly does the madness stop. I feel like I’m back in the 5th grade and everyone is saying “As if!” and “What *long pause* everrr!” but now we’re all older and more mature so I assume we can figure out a synonymous adjective to fierce. If in the event your mind has completely blanked, here are a few suggestions:

  • If you’d like to follow the true translation of fierce go for: savage, ferocious, or brutal
  • Want to sound like a disguised drag queen? Try saying: divine, fabulous, or even scandalous
  • Are you truly amazed? How about: exquisite, ravishing, poetic, or stunning
  • Are you impressed, but would like to keep an air of indifference? Denote the item: lovely, charming, or personable

Going Wide

Pink Rock Candy, H&M wide leg jeans, Chelsea Rae

My mom constantly expresses her staunch disdain for the many pair of skinny jeans I own. She says they don’t look right, and yadda ya, but still I persist on buying them and ignore her protests. I figure, its my money, and if in the event I do actually look like a fool, then I’ve paid to look like a fool and she shouldn’t care. Then, last Thursday I walk into the H&M on the corner of 42nd and 5th and right in front by the escalators are these amazing pair of wide leg jeans. I had to have them, and luckily, my mom loves them too.

For the most part I don’t dress for anyone but myself. If others complain, I just ignore them, but there is that little part of me that can be swayed by pictures of others looking wicked in a certain outfit/item of clothing. That’s what happened with my new pair of wide leg jeans.

Katie Holmes— God, I can’t believe I’m about to actually talk about her on my blog— well, she’s been dressing really casually, but it looks rad to the point that I think everyone is falling for her look. Unfortunately, I, too, am quite susceptible to the charms of her rolled boyfriend jeans and high-waisted wide legs. She just looks really put together but undeniably comfortable, and any collage student, who actually cares about fashion in the slightest, knows polished yet casual is the best look for class.

So, because of Katie Holmes, I finally gave into the wide leg jeans trend, and bought a pair. Actually, if you count my sister’s dark washed denim wide leg jeans that I wear from time to time, I have 1½ pairs of wide leg jeans— sharing is caring, right? The jeans are a tad long, but most jeans are long compared to my really short legs. I’m wearing 5½ inch heels in the picture and they’re still brushing the ground— note to self, get jeans hemmed— but, otherwise the fit is perfect, and I love how it looks with a casual v-neck tucked in. I probably would’ve even paired it with a cardigan if it wasn’t 80 degrees outside.

For some odd reason, I’ve been buying a lot of gray, so, almost every new t-shirt I have is some shade of gray. I’ve really got to get color back into my wardrobe!

Who has inspired you to wear something different, lately? Am I crazy for thinking Katie Holmes is starting to dress more stylish, and who else thinks she hired a new stylist?

p.s. My hair isn’t cut, it’s just curly and pinned up…

I Kissed A Boy Just To Start Shit

Chelsea Rae | Entertainment, Music | Tuesday, 26 August 2008
Pink Rock Candy, Cobra Starship

I always forget to post about new songs/bands I love, and by the time I remember, I’m really late and its sort of pointless to write about. Actually, I always seem to write about Fueled By Ramen bands, which makes me feel like a total scene girl wannabe or something, but c’est la vie, right? So, here I go again,  writing about some scene band that I’m sure most of the world hates, but they make me smile, especially when they parody summer hits like “I Kissed a Girl.”

So I’m not exactly sure how any of this came about, but yesterday I ended up on FriendsorEnemies.com after forgetting about it for a couple months, and Fall Out Boy has this viral marketing thing to support their new album Foile a Deux going on. I really don’t understand it, but that’s not the point. There’s a Decaydance Mixtape available for free download and on it are some new FOB songs and a bunch of songs from Decaydance bands and some of their friends. One of those songs is Cobra Starship’s parody of Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl”, aptly entitled “I Kissed A Boy”.

Now I love Katy Perry, and “I Kissed A Girl” doesn’t bother me as much as it does other people, but Cobra Starship’s version is a thousand times better, sheerly because its making fun of the scene in the truest form. You just have to listen to it, and then you’ll understand:

AA’s Multi-Dress Dress

Pink Rock Candy, American Apparel, Le Sac Dress

Where do you go to get you casual, multi-purpose, no-frills clothes? American Apparel of course! All of their basics are good quality and aren’t made in sweatshops. Sure, they may be a tad over-priced but if I can rationalize thousand dollar Louboutins then I can definitely understand the necessity for a $35 t-shirt, right? Today, however, I’m not going to wax poetic about their t-shirts, leggings, bodycon skirts, thigh-high socks, or even their bodysuits, for that matter. Right now, it’s their extra-versatile ‘Le Sac Dress’ that excite me.

Sure, this dress would have been much better for summer considering my days of wearing sleeveless dresses on the east coast are numbered, but it will be just as cute under a cardigan or even the perfect leather motorcycle jacket. The bitter chill of winter is upon us, and there’s no stopping it— but, weather issues aside, I love the thought of having a basic dress that can be multiple dresses with a slight variation in how you tie it.

I have to admit, I’m not really sure about all of their dress-tying suggestions, but for the most part I would wear each look. Plus, I’m pretty sure there are other variations on ‘Le Sac Dress’ you could figure out if you had the time and the creativity. Perhaps, AA should give you a complimentary how-to guide with a ton of different ways to tie the dress.

Not only can you switch up ‘Le Sac Dress’ by changing the way it’s tied and wrapped, but you can also change the straps. They’re selling extra straps at AA for $10, but I’m sure you could just go to you’re local fabric/craft store and buy some cool ribbon to be the straps for a couple bucks. Either way, this multi-dress dress is definitely worth the $38 they’re charging. Now all we have to do is get them to stop charging $35 for some of their tees and everything with be square.
