Spring 2009 Fashion Week Fix – 9/5/08

Chelsea Rae Simmons | Fashion Week, Spring/Summer | Friday, 05 September 2008

Fashion week just started today and only 4 collections are up on Style.com, but I already want it to be spring again, or at least I want these lines to be available now and for fall to be as warm as humanly possible— where are you global warming? Out of the four collections, Elie Tahari, Rachel Roy, Sue Stemp, and Travota, I can’t say I’m totally smitten over the entirety of any of the collections, though there are bits and pieces of each, I’m quite fond of.

Though Elie Tahari is really known for practicality and sportswear, it wasn’t the gorgeous bathing suits or sassy pencil skirt that I really liked, it was th diaphanous fabrics and floral prints that really endear me to Elie Tahari’s Spring 2009 collection. The flowy, 70s-style, maxi dresses remind me of something I’d wear when I go to Hawaii. I know airy, flowery dresses aren’t the most original idea for spring, but having a spring season without them would be absolutely terrible. Oh, and did I mention the brilliant jodhpurs that I’m sure will only look good on a model or at least someone with the figure of one?

Though my favorite thing about Rachel Roy’s Spring 2009 collection was the über-structured tulip skirts, I’m not quite sure these qualify as spring designs. That being said, I think contrast where fashion is going, or maybe its where fashion has always been. Currently the big trend is winter florals so why not skip the fluff this spring (sorry Tahari) and get a bit architectural? Spring doesn’t always have to be about being an ethereal wood nymph, sometimes its okay to be that strong yet fashionably dressed valkyrie.

I always love Sue Stemp because her collections are extremely frilly and girlie, but to be honest, I only have two words to describe why I like Sue Stemp’s Spring 2009 collection: head scarves, or is that one word?

Trovata’s Spring 2009 collection was one of those collections that made me really want to dress like one of the boys, but in the most feminine way possible. All the pieces reminded me of sailing down the New England coastline, in an over-sized nautical shirt you stole from your beau. I pretty much would die and go to heaven if all guys dressed like the guy above and as an added bonus I love it if I could get my hands on this adorable gray romper!

If you haven’t been over to Style.com, you can click here and check out the collections in their entirety. What are your thoughts on what you’ve seen/heard about NY Fashion Week so far?

  • Thanks for the heads up. I hadn't gotten a chance to check them out myself. I'm really liking Trovata's boyish twist!
