Doubly Inspired

Chelsea Rae Simmons | Art,Utterly Inspired | Tuesday, 30 December 2008

The other day, I saw a fantastic documentary about Peter Beard on the Sundance Channel. The documentary, Peter Beard: Scrapbooks from Africa and Beyond, contained everything from Azzedine Alaïa campaign shoots in Africa to home footage containing the aftermath of Beard’s run-in with a not so happy elephant— broken ribs and internal bleeding don’t seem too fun when you’re two hours from a hospital. The documentary also captured a great exhibit he did in Paris using double exposure and a giant Polaroid.

Though all of Beard’s art is utterly original and interesting— they’re bound to when layered with original african paintings and his own blood— the double exposure prints were my favorite. The over-lapping pictures give the pieces a very spectral quality and make even the simplest photos infinitely more interesting.

Now, double exposure can be created very easily using photoshop and other photo-editting tools, making the results slightly less captivating than something created by Beard— though, that goes for most art and photography compared to Beard’s— but, searching the net does provide a couple cool photographers whose multiple exposures, if stumbled upon while surfing the net, will definitely make your day a bit more inspired.

Two such young photographers, Ren Rox and Cecilia a.k.a. *ailicec*, I found on while sifting through the infinite abyss that is Flickr.com. Both primarily create multiple exposures the old fashion way but also prove there’s nothing wrong with tinkering around the shop. Check out all their Flickr collections by clicking the photos below. Bringing In The Spirit

Tomorrow’s Christmas, and the hardest thing for most people to do is to dress festively without looking like a complete and utter joke. In the December issue of Elle, Joe Zee gives a lot of great tips, and I took that and decided to create my own Christmas outfit.

That skirt is one of my favorites for the winter because it’s really basic and is heavy because unfortunately, the north-eastern winters get a bit chilly— what an understatement. I actually wore that skirt to two interviews I had a couple of weeks ago. One was for PR Consulting and the other was for Tractenberg & Co. Though I didn’t get both internships, I was asked to be an intern in the fashion department of T&C. I’m so excited to start!

The shirt is a satin boudoir style dress from Victoria’s Secret. I doubt I will ever wear it as a dress, but it’s perfect for tucking in and wearing as a shirt. The bright red color was perfect for bringing the Christmas spirit to the outfit, and the hoodie kept things really simple because hanging out with my family doesn’t need an extremely dressy look.

I’ll be posting throughout the holidays.

A Bittersweet Second

Pink Rock Candy, Blythe Ashleigh

Two years ago, this fashion blog sprouted out of my boredom and a little nudge in the right direction from my sister.

This post was going to be about what extravagant presents I’d love to receive for my 2nd ‘Blogiversary’, but I just couldn’t seem to write that because in truth there is only one impossible present I truly want and, unfortunately, will never get.

I’ve thought of writing about this for the past two months, but I haven’t exactly been able to find the words to say it. I’m also not even sure if I should, or even want, to be writing about this, but as I have said before, its my blog. So, here I go.

A little over two months ago, my sister, Blythe Ashleigh died of what is called Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). It was the most terrify, surreal moment of my life, and I still find myself forgetting I don’t have to pick her up from the train station every now and then.
I’m not writing this for sympathy or empathy. Hearing people tell me how sorry they are is becoming one of my biggest pet peeves. The fact is, she was 23, caring, smart, hilarious, and beautiful— things like that aren’t supposed to happen to people like her, but when they do, you tend to change.

Blythe was always my champion even when she didn’t completely agree, but now I have to be my own champion. I have to be strong for myself and fight my own battles. I have to make my life what I want it to be without her pushing me and telling me not to be scared. Pink Rock Candy wouldn’t be in existence without Blythe telling me to write about fashion if I can’t actually study it in school. The initial plan was for both of us to write, but she was always too busy being a grown up to sit a computer for hours and fiddle with a blog. Even without writing she read it everyday, she loved it because I loved it, and she was constantly informing me of my grammatical errors. I’d scoff at her about nit-picking, and then rush to a computer to fix them. Now, PRC seems like the last thing we still have together, the last thing that will forever be ours.

I don’t know if there is an afterlife. I don’t know if she’s watching over me or some other family member. I don’t even know what to feel half the time. But, I do know Blythe always wanted people to follow their dreams, and would stop at nothing to help them accomplish their goals. And, I do know that in some weird way, this blog has become “part of my dreams.” Writing PRC is part of my long-term plan, and being as fickle as I am, I know Blythe would be proud that I’ve stuck with this for two years and don’t see myself stopping any time soon.

Two years ago, two sisters started this blog, only one sister truly wrote in it, but two hearts will forever be behind every word.

The Corgan Pughsuit Apparatus

Chelsea Rae Simmons | Entertainment,Fashion,Men's Fashion,Music,Music Videos,News | Wednesday, 17 December 2008

I’ve been up since 5:15 AM, I have three finals today and will be on campus until 8 PM. I’m completely exhausted, and have just found out silly Billy Corgan is trying to make a statement again by informing the world that Smashing Pumpkins are no longer going to put out full albums only singles because “they drag over the two singles, and skip over the rest [of the cd].”

Oh, the humanity Corgan, maybe people would listen to full albums if every song was as good as the singles. Don’t get my parents started about how “every song was great on vinyls because you couldn’t just skip over a song. You had to listen to it all, so artists really cared.”

I also found out that Gareth Pugh is doing a menswear line to be shown in January. Now guys will know the pleasure of dressing like aliens and horror creatures. I love you Pugh!

Last but not leats, I have had the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus song, “You Better Pray”, stuck in my head for at lesat 2 weeks, making me over-eager to see the guys tossing their well-coiffed heads all over my computer screen in the video:
