Tinted Windows

Chelsea Rae Simmons | Entertainment,Music,News | Wednesday, 18 February 2009
Pink Rock Candy, Tinted Windows band

What is Tinted Windows, and why is it important that it’s coming soon?

Apparently, unless some underhanded clock turner has set my clock back to February 18 all the while it’s actually April 1st, Tinted Windows is the unbelievable merging of Smashing Pumpkin’s badass guitarist James Iha, Cheap Trick drummer Bun E. Carlos, Fountains of Wayne bassist Adam Schlesinger, and Taylor Hanson doing vocal duties.

I’ll let that sink it a bit…

Anything Smashing Pumpkins is bound to get me excited about the melodic future, but adding Taylor Hanson— the Hanson brother everyone thought was a girl, but I lusted over for at least the last three years of the 20th Century— to the mix is slightly off-putting in multiple ways.

The hopefully matured music consumer that I’ve become is slightly confused as to how Taylor Hanson managed to squeeze himself into this equation, but the 10-year-old girl in me just went,” Eeeeee! Taylor Hanson!”

Either way, I’m stoked to hear what comes of this warlock of a rock band when they release their already recorded, but as of yet, untitled, album this spring. Also, according to Billboard.com, Tinted Windows is playing at Billboard’s showcase at SXSW on March 20.

p.s. I know it’s fashion week. I know there are shows to review. I KNOW…Marc Jacobs!

p.p.s. That is not by any means the official graphic for tented windows. It’s from the Oh No They Didn’t post.

  • MMMBop

You could always try listening to some of Hanson’s newer music. MMMBop was 12 years ago, recorded when they were kids, along time ago.

Mmmbop, I didn’t mean to offend any people have continued to be Hanson fans. I fully commend them for being the first pop artists to peak my fancy. They were amazing musicians when I was younger, so within the last 12 years I’m sure they’ve progressed. However, I still think adding Taylor to this “super group” is a bit odd, potentially because I loved them way back when or maybe because I know this gives me another opportunity to fawn over at least one of them again.

Really though, MMMBop’s point is that the only people who think that adding him as vocalist is odd are people who haven’t heard their work for 12 years. That’s frustrating to the people who have listened to their last two albums…losing track of an artist for 12 years and then posting comments about that artist as if he has been stuck in time (with some bloggers even including pictures of him as a 14 year old when he is now nearly 26) is…I don’t know, not good journalism? Good for you that you’re open to giving this new band a listen…in the meantime, Hanson’s current music is readily available for a free listen on their myspace. I mean, Iha and Schlesinger clearly don’t think it’s odd to have him as their vocalist, so…

Man, the Hanson boys sure have grown up! It seems like just yesterday that I was listing to Go – which was given 4 stars and called “Great” on EverHype (www.everhype.com/?utm_source=bc) – and now two of them are married, there are little Hanson’s, and this one is in a new band. Are the band of brothers they breaking up?

Honestly, like I said before, I didn’t mean to offend any fans of Hanson, past or present. I realize that Taylor has an amazing voice or I wouldn’t have liked them so much when I did listen to them. Unfortunately, they sort of dropped off my radar and I was too busy to pick them back up. I don’t think this is an awkward combination because Taylor I think Taylor is talentless, because I have so much respect for him as a musician. I feel like it’s an odd pairing in the way that putting Jim Morrison and with Elton John would have been weird in a fantastic way, if Morrison was still alive.

Whether I’ve listened to the newer Hanson albums is neither here nor there because I have never doubted there musical ability. I just chose not to partake in the Hanson fandom any longer. They were a part of developing the kind of music I like now, but I also listened to classical music when I was younger, something I rarely do now. I’m sure their newer albums are good, there simply isn’t enough time to love every good band out there.
