Are You America’s Most Stylish Blogger?

Chelsea Rae Simmons | Contests,Fashion | Wednesday, 30 September 2009

It seems today is all about personal style.

Pink Rock Candy, America's Most Stylish Blogger Contest

Bluefly and AOL StyleList are holding a casting call for America’s Most Stylish Blogger, of which there are a ton. They will pick eight bloggers who they determine the most stylish to compete in a contest to determine who is truly the most stylish blogger in the US.

Each week, these eight bloggers will be sent an item from Bluefly to be used in an outfit that will be voted on by the masses, and at the end of the five week contest, the blogger with the most cumulative votes will receive:

- A $1,000 shopping spree on Bluefly
- A weekly column on AOL StyleList
- Their very own Blogger Store on Bluefly
- The title of America’s Most Stylish Blogger!

If you’re a blogger and think you have what it takes, enter here and become a fan of America’s Most Stylish Blogger on Facebook to get updates.

p.s. I entered just to see what happens. Fingers crossed!

I’m a Style Huntress

Chelsea Rae Simmons | Fashion,My Style | Wednesday, 30 September 2009

A couple of days ago, I received an email from the lovely Lorelle of the blog Phoenix Rising about Personal Style Week. Apparently she and Melissa of Broken Nerves both wrote similar posts about the hunt for personal style and decided to dub the week “Personal Style Week.”

Their individual posts were written over a week ago, but I think every week should be Personal Style Week because true style never stops, and for that matter, the pursuance of one’s own style is also endless.

I’ve explained numerous times my style inconsistencies. I like to think my wardrobe evokes a feel of hippie meets Pocahontas meets working girl— not of the sexual-favor-selling sort of way— but most days I doubt it looks that way. The clothes I wear fit my mood at the moment I choose them, two hours later I may hate what I’m wearing, or I might wear similar outfits for a week straight.

To me, getting dressed every morning— sometimes afternoon— is a new chance to be someone else. Sometimes I’m a saucy librarian or a soccer mom taking my kid to practice (read: puppy for an early morning walk), and other times, I’m a motorcycle chick disguised as a debutante or Coco Chanel dressed as Jimi Hendrix’s girlfriend. I’m obviously not morphing in to these characters, and I don’t have multiple personality disorder, but clothes help me exude a certain essence. At the end of the day, however, said essence is interpreted by everyone I encounter. So, perhaps personal style is actually in the eye of the beholder.

So, what do my clothes say about me today? To me, my outfit says, “I’m exhausted but don’t want to look so, and it’s too cold to wear a skirt/dress,” but I’m sure everyone else sees something else. What do you think I’m trying to say with my outfit?

Speak up! What does personal style mean to you?

A Little Dahl in My Life

Pink Rock Candy, Laura Dahl collection

Having been under the weather since Friday, all I wanted were cute, comfortable pieces of clothing I could lounge in and be paired casually with a hoodie for the times I had to leave the house to walk my dog or get cupcakes to make me feel better. Oddly, these items were nowhere to be found, and that’s because they were still on the Laura Dahl website waiting to be purchased.

Laura Dahl, a Las Vegas native, moved to NYC to pursue her dream of designing clothes. She worked under Cynthia Rowley, Anne Bowen and Catharine Maladrino, then went solo. Dahl started with the Wifebeader line, a collection of intricately beaded tees, tanks and tops, in 2003, and in 2006 launched the Laura Dahl line which is currently tops, bottoms and outerwear.

Not only would most of the pieces in the collection have been perfect for the chilly weekend I spent coughing, sniffling, and aching— I had a cold and my wisdom teeth were killing me— but they’re things I could see myself wearing on a daily basis, mixing them with more structured pieces for work or just wearing them as is for school and play dates— yes, big girls should still make play dates with friends.

My favorite items from the collection are the ‘York’ top ($54), the ‘Warhol’ dress ($238), and the Keats jacket ($348).

p.s. Laura Dahl also has a blog called Dahlight where she talks about everything from food recipes to fashion news to movies, music, and life lessons.

Eryn Brinié: Can’t Stop The Feeling

Chelsea Rae Simmons | Dresses,Fashion | Monday, 28 September 2009
Pink Rock Candy, Eryn Brinie, Camel Plaid Dress
Camel Plaid Dress, $132 on PixieMarket.com

I’ve been obsessing over South Korean-based brand, Eryn Brinié, for almost a year. When I first heard of and fell for the brand I was actually interning at the public relations company that represents them, so I thought it best to remain unbiased and refrain from posting about them. I have kept my silence for much too long, especially since I now know that you can buy Eryn Brinié online at Revolve Clothing and Pixie Market thanks to a post NYLON did on the brand at the beginning of this month.

I’ve been meaning to make my way to the Eryn Brinié SoHo boutique since the beginning of the summer, to no avail— I’m in NYC at least twice a week, but I’m either working in the Garment District or never get below 14th Street before stores close.

Though I’ve had plenty of time to fondle the soft fabrics and seen the durability of the well-made garments tested relentlessly by editors and stylists alike— they aren’t as easy on press samples as you’d think— those aren’t the reasons I love the brand. I first feel for Eryn Brinié because the first pieces I saw were super ethereal shirts and dresses, and then as the seasons progressed the sheer spring pieces turned to bright summer numbers, like high-waist, neon, denim miniskirts, and heavier woven winter coats.

Did I mention, everything looks very high-end without the jaw-dropping prices? I kid you not, I don’t think I’ve met an Eryn Brinié piece over $300, and that includes winter coats.

Though online retailers are making it easier for us to get our hands on Eryn Brinié, currently, the entire collection is only available to US residents at their SoHo location: 501 Broadway (btw. Spring St. and Broome St.), New York, NY 10012. However, from the looks of the website they are working on their own e-commerce store, which makes me squeal with glee!

Fanboys in Disguise

Chelsea Rae Simmons | Fashion,Fashion Week,Spring/Summer | Wednesday, 23 September 2009
Pink Rock Candy, Jonathan Saunders S/S 2010 runway collection, Transforners dress

Am I wrong, or is there an Autobot logo on this dress?

I was initially disheartened with Jonathan Saunder’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection, not because the designs were lacking, but because his normally vibrant collection is full of what can be described as Easter colors.

As I clicked through the collection on Style.com, I processed the pastel pieces, the sheer insets, the phantom tie-dyes, and the bra/skirt combinations I’d only sport while running around my house trying to find a top. Suddenly, I’m hit with this dress worn by model, Janeil, that makes me question my sanity.

Am I really seeing what I think I’m seeing?

I love that subconsciously or not, Saunders is a Transformers fanboy and has designed a dress for  a geeky fashion lover to wear to the midnight opening of the next Transformers movie. A movie she will secretly love, but announce that she abhors because it isn’t even close to the original Transformers cartoon plot, and thus, disgraces the name— ahem— not that I have any experience with that matter. I only saw the movies for Shia LaBeouf.

What was I talking about again?
