Forever 21 and I are “On a Break”

Chelsea Rae Simmons | Pink Rock Candy,Tops,Vests | Monday, 28 December 2009
Pink Rock Candy, Forwever 21 Mineral Wash Vest I must be sick.

After perusing the Forever 21 website today, looking for something— I don’t know what, but something— I suddenly realized, the reason I couldn’t find that something was not because there weren’t cute clothes, like this mineral wash vest, on the site, but because for some strange reason, in my mind, no amount of cuteness could make up for the cheap fabrics and poor construction of the items.

I’m not sure when it happened. It seems like only yesterday I was trotting my happy heiny to F21 to pick up anything and everything and caring less that I would have to re-purchase new clothes in the very near future.

Maybe it all started with Target’s GO International collections. No matter the designer, Proenza Schouler… Alexander McQueen… Rodarte, I couldn’t wrap my head around wearing fabrics that draped as well as a paper bag, so instead of spending $40 on a polyblend dress, I went to the accessories department and bought another pair of $10 sunnies that I knew I would lose.

I sort of miss the carefree girl who shopped and bought just for the sake of it, but after being exposed to and wearing well-made designer duds, I’m not sure she’ll ever come back. My wallet however needs her to come back because I, unfortuantely, can’t afford to shop at Needless Mark-ups Neiman Marcus all the time.

I’m not sure what’s going on, but things better make more sense in 2010.

This is something my mom and I talk about all the time. If I get anything at F21, it’s from the clearance section. I don’t understand why I have the urge to shop there when I could get something equally cute at Macy’s or JCPenny (seriously, I’ve gotten clothes from the latter that last for *years*. And, despite how much I love the pieces, I probably won’t be investing in the Rodarte Target collection, either.

My mom always yells at me about buying quality items too, but before, I never really listened. It’s crazy!

Amen sistah! That’s why I never shop at F21 anymore. I only get quick fix accessories.

If I only purchased high-end quality items, my closet would consist of like 4 garments. I can’t live off 4 garments. So until I have the funds.. F21 and I are going to remain close friends. We’re so close in fact, that the one item you chose to showcase is actually in my closet right now. They’re making that same vest with eyelet studs now. I would know that… I was there yesterday. Ahhh maybe Forever and I should go on a break…
Thanks for the comment. I agree, carrying a Birkin and then over stuffing it is definitely sending mixed messages. Shame on her. She should give it to someone else on the waiting list with better intentions. =P

That's what's making me so scared. I can't afford expensive clothes, so I haven't purchased anything new in months (unless I found some amazing designer-find at a thrift store). Oh, the humanity!

p.s. thanks for the WP help!

I wholeheartedly agree with you. As a matter of fact, one of the resolutions I've made for the new year is to invest in quality clothing. Not sure how I'm going to get around that myself, but I guess it's going to involve a whole lot of saving.

In addition the “cheap fabrics and poor construction of the items”, most of their items no longer appeal to me and whenever I make a trip to one of their physical stores, I find myself bolting out the door in seconds. There are always too many people and it's such a complete nightmare trying to find clothes that are constantly in a messy state. Well, at least that's how the stores in NYC are.

I didn't shop at Forever 21 for the longest time because the stores are so manic and clothes are all over the place. Not only did it give me a bit of a headache, but it made me anxious (because I'm a bit OCD).

If I made quality clothing my New Year's Resolution, I totally wouldn't keep it because I never keep my resolutions, but I am going to try really hard not to fall into the fast fashion trap.

    Ummm…

I'm not sure I was trying to scare anyone, and I do have a bit of OCD
(obsessive compulsive disorder). I could prove it, but I'm not sure it's
    worth my time.

    Thanks for visiting, though!
