Messy Room? Clean It Up!

Chelsea Rae Simmons | Fashion,Pink Rock Candy | Monday, 08 February 2010
Pink Rock Candy, Messy Room

My room is a disaster. I have a bit of an obsessive nature leading to a small case of hoarding, but fortunately, or unfortunately, that hoarding only entails clothes and magazines. However, I’m ready to turn a new leaf and get rid of all the unnecessary stuff.

Generally, people decide to have a major overhaul in right before the new year or sometime during early-Spring. I, on the other hand, chose mid-February for one reason and one reason only, FASHION WEEK.

While trying to figure out what I’ll be wearing the next couple of weeks, I realized I had no clothes, or more precisely, I had too many clothes and am completely overwhelmed by that fact. I’m not sure how many pieces an average person has in their wardrobe, but I’m pretty sure I have at least two times that number. My closet is packed and my drawers are full. I also have two large Tupperware containers stuffed with clothes, and that doesn’t account for the constant stream of clothes I have in the laundry.

The worst part is, the only clothes I really wear are the ones I regularly wash, meaning all the clothes in my drawers, closet, and Tupperware containers are just pieces of stitch fabric taking up space.

So today, I’m starting a clothing cleanse and getting rid of (aka donating) the clothes I know I’ll never wear. Also, to prevent the inevitable re-cluttering after accumulating more trendy clothes I’ll never wear, I’m going to come up with a list of things I should have in my wardrobe. Unfortunately, I have no idea what that list should look like.

That’s why I’m bringing this topic to you. In your opinion, what are the essentials every 20-something girl needs? I’m looking for types of clothes, numbers and fabrics. Let’s hear it!

Good luck! My cousin and I have the same bad habit of hoarding clothes since our body size hasn't changed much since middle school. I have a ginormous pile of stuff that I was supposed to bring to goodwill, but it's been snowing like crazy this weekend.

Yea, don't feel too bad. My closet is overflowing. I've begun to fold clothes on a shelf that's connected to my room. I bought a portable closet…and I have bags of dirty laundry hiding everywhere X_X.

Essentials? Well, definitely keep your leggings and skinny jeans. I tend to keep the stuff that I like to wear alot so I've held on to my tunics, hiwaisted mini skirts, and minidresses. I donated most of my jeans, t-shirts, and sweaters…soo then again, I'm probably not a good person for suggestions of essentials.

  • oh that's a tough one. i am not a believer in certain “items” a person should or shouldn't have in their wardrobe. what it comes down to is what feels good to you? what can't you live without? i know where you are coming from as i have a problem with getting rid of things but i usually make a goal to twice a year to clean the closet out. letting go is hard but it is freeing as well. love.

You know I create a theme although, it changes all the time but for a month try to keep a theme and store, put away and hang all the stuff that doesn't fit in that theme for me that usually helps. I just cleaned up my small loft which I hardly ever sleep in since I am currently babysitting my tween little sister and my apt lets just say it looked like a hurricane lol. Hope this idea helps :)

    Much love,
    Glendy

  • Ooooo! I never thought of having a monthly theme. I'm not sure I'd be able to stick to it though. It sounds fun, I might try that!

  • That's how my bed looks when I am cleaning out my closet. I can relate! I think you should start with the basics: great fitting dark denim, a classic blazer, some simple tops, and practical footwear for work/school. I think fun accessories are essential, too. What do you wear most often? I'd start with those building blocks and then get rid of dated pieces or things you never wear, and things that don't fit or flatter you. Oh, and don't forget to keep or stock up on flattering, functional dresses/skirts for dates, parties, weddings, and other events.

  • Ahh, dresses! I always buy dresses and skirts in the summer, then come fall and winter I have a closet full of fluttery frocks I can't wear for another 6 months. Item One on my list should be fall/winter dresses and skirts.

Don't give them away for free! Make some grab bags based on size and type of clothing! Make each bag 10 or 20 dollars! Please!
