FOR the LOVE of 21 Beads

Chelsea Rae | Accessories, Necklaces | Tuesday, 10 June 2008

Pink Rock Candy, Forever 21, beaded necklace

Let’s be completely honest. The stuff all of us love buying from Forever 21 isn’t the best quality. Most of it is an exact replica of something from our favorite runways and even if it isn’t knocked-off, the clothes are sure to fall apart sooner than you want and the necklaces turn you or themselves green within a couple wears,. That, however, hasn’t stopped me from shopping there, and it definitely doesn’t keep me from loving their cheap prices and constantly updated e-commerce store. Though I am warning all that read this blog, do not to buy any metallic jewelry I highly advise you view and love this rad beaded necklace.

The ‘Zaria Beaded Necklace’ is from F21’s new shop For Love 21 (the model looks like Alicia Keys, weird!), which is currently only chock full of accessories, but I’m assuming sooner or later clothes will actually start appearing on the site too.

Beaded necklaces are the only kind of necklace I suggest buying from Forevs sheerly because there is very little metal that can tarnish. Plus, this necklace, in particular, is completely gaudy and granny’s-favorite-jewels fabulous, both traits I tend to look for in necklaces. Also some of the beads sort of look like eyes, making it a bit creepy, but again creepy in a good way!

General Rule: If you play with your necklaces, like I do, make sure to check the strength of the metal links, and if it’s a beaded necklace, check to make sure the string used to thread the beads won’t snap when yanked and tugged.

What other stores are you guilty ‘poor quality’ pleasures?

Vintage Dior on YOOX.com

Pink Rock Candy, 1970s Christian Dior sunglasses frames

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Christian Dior? At the risk of sounding like Kimora Lee Simmons or Christian Siriano, I must say the first word I think of is “FABULOUS!” Hence the reason, I was beyond excited to learn YOOX.com will be selling vintage Dior items starting June 4th. The more than 20 vintage items being sold were created in the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s, and I knew there was bound to be at least one piece I’d fall desperately in love with and lust over for a minimum of a month, and boy, was I right!

As I scrolled through the lookbook, I imagined caressing dazzling film actress, Maria Felix’s, haute couture cocktail dress from ‘67 or being blinded by the gleam of an amethyst necklace owned by Adriana Grassi, correspondent for publications such as Women’s Wear Daily and Gap Magazine. However, it wasn’t the perfectly cut dresses or the glittering jewels that piqued my fancy, it was a chic pair of sunglasses from the 70s.

Through some combination of the ombre frames, the unique shape, and my love of sunnies, I knew these glasses were made for me— better yet, if reincarnation really does exist, I was the proud owner of this pair of sunglasses, or at least a pair like this, during the 70s, in one of my past lives.

Unfortunately for me, I don’t have $700 to spend on anything, much less a pair of sunnies. So, I’m destined to a life, or month, or week, of irrational lusting. The kind where you talk about the object of your affection until the ears of everyone around you bleed. Luckily, by the time their oraphuses heal, your friends and family will have forgiven you, and you’ll be back to normal and ready to obsess over something else!

The sale officially launches on YOOX.com, June 4th and is expected to run through July.

Goodies For Lost Girls

Pink Rock Candy, 31 Corn Lane, hot air balloon bag, feather earring, strawberry ring

I know it’s been many, many moons, but I was abducted by Pinocchio look-a-likes and forced to be a real girl for a while. They made me plan ahead, go grocery shopping, and go to work. I escaped using pixie dust and happy thoughts, so now I’m back and jonesing for something super fun, and what’s more fun than fighting Captain Hook neon colors, plastic jewelry, and hot air balloons? I couldn’t think of anything either— that’s why I give you my favorites from one of the most funnest (yes!) companies I know, 31 Corn Lane!

Technically, the most fun any one person can have, or just the most fun I could have, would be at the top of a super high roller coaster, sitting in the front of the train, about to plunge to my adrenaline-charged potential doom. Since I’m nowhere near Cedar Point and the Millinium Force Roller Coaster, I’m going to hope someone decides to take me on a hot air balloon ride or just know of my love of heights and giant bags and buy me this beyond adorable ‘Woah Balloons! SuperShopper Bag’. Getting my hands on either one of the ‘Woah Balloons!’ bags (there’s a tote too!), would definitely make up for the fun I missed out on when my town carnival decided to shut down before they even opened it. Bummer!

I also really like the ‘Solid Big Bling Berry Ring’. Nothing screams summer fun like a juicy, fist-sized strawberries. I’m talking about the kind of strawberries that drip juice down your chin and stain your face, fingers, and new white shirt. For a cleaner version they can be set atop yummy crêpes or crème brûlée or just turned to plastic and place on your finger. This ring would make me reminisce sweetly about my favorite desserts at anytime of the day, and if I’m swiped by those darn marionettes again, I’ll have happy thoughts right on my finger.

Last but not least, my favorite of favorites is the ‘Pink Preppy-Punk Pocahontas Style Single Earring’. Feathers are undoubtedly my new obsession— sorry pirate-themed anything— but, who knew Pocahontas could be preppy and 80s punk at the same time. I don’t usually wear earrings, but technically this is just ONE earring, so it doesn’t really count.

I’ll be back tomorrow, but for now I’m going to hula hoop, play with Power Ranger action figures, and dominate at 4-Square!

What are the things you wish you could still do from when you were just a lil’ tyke?

SpoonFed Art Giveaway

Chelsea Rae | Accessories, Contests | Wednesday, 07 May 2008
Pink Rock Candy, SpoonFed Art, spoon necklace pendants

The fashion world has been in an uproar about new laws on excessive thinness, dead models because of eating disorders, and runway exclusions because models are too thin or not thin enough, depending on where, but not many people are truly being constructive about the eating disorder issue. Last year, I wrote about an awesome company called SpoonFed Art, and not only do they make gorgeous charms out of spoons, but the owner was inspired to create her company after her own battle with an eating disorder and is a giant supporter of the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) and even designed a limited edition NEDA necklace for their annual fundraising auction. Now, SpoonFed Art wants to give you a free necklace!

This is Spoonfed Art’s first ever contest, and the winner receives a gorgeous spoon pendant necklace of your choice with their new pretty brushed metal chains (in 16″ or 26″). All you have to do is sign up for their free newsletter anytime during May, and voila, you’re entered. You can also get extra entries for each pendant you purchase from their website. The first week of June, owner, Karen Collins will randomly choose a winner and the winner will have their choice of any of the pretty pendants.

For more info about SpoonFed Art you can go to the website here: www.spoonfedart.com and read my scoop here!

Feathered Dreams

Pink Rock Candy, Chelsea Rae, Feather Headband

Ever since I was little, or when ever the Disney movie came out, I wanted to be Pocahontas. My parents bought me the cassette, yes, cassette, of the soundtrack and I would listen to it every night while I tried to go to sleep— I don’t think I ever made it past “Just Around the River Bend”. This little Pocahontas obsession has been in remission until recently when I saw pictures of Mary Kate wearing a feather headband, I think they were in Nylon a while back. Since then, I’ve been contemplating ways to make my own feather headband, and I just recently completed my mission.

The headband doesn’t really say Pocahontas, it kind of says “I’m a flapper”— but, flappers are definitely up there on my list of things I want to be, among hippies, pirates, old school groupies, and princesses.

I made it using an old headband, some ribbon, a feather patch, and some gorilla glue (I couldn’t find my glue gun). I just wrapped the ribbon around the headband and then slapped on the feathers. It sounds very nontechnical, and that’s because it was. The process was a very macho, fix it with duct tape, rub some dirt in it kind of thing, but it turned out very pretty and girlie. I’ve worn the headband with pretty much every hairstyle I have in my arsenal, and it works really well with everything, though because I have a side part, I do like it better when the feathers are on the side with no bangs.

If you want to see more feather looks, lc from Fops and Dandies just bought a really cute feather crown looking headband, that is much more Pocahontas-y than mine, or you can just etsy search feather headbands.

p.s. Since I’m name dropping bloggers, I just met with Secretista (if you haven’t visited her blog do it!), because we go to school together, and were starting this super-semi-secret project on campus that I think will be really fun, but a lot of work. I’ll tell you more about it when things start falling into place (I don’t want to jinx it), but what would you suggest as a good way to find people who are interested in fashion on a college campus (other than facebook)?

The PR DL

Chelsea Rae | Accessories, Events, News | Friday, 11 April 2008

I’ve been super busy, for some apparent reason, and that has definitely effected my blogging. Though I try to write good content as often as possible, I’m constantly emailed by PR people trying to get their clients message across, and to be quite honest, many of the messages are really good. I, unfortunately, haven’t really had the time to fully research everything, but I’ve decided to give you, my fabulous readers, a chance to make the executive decisions for yourself. So, here are the deets from best of the best press releases I’ve received this week:

  • Saturday, May 12th is Tax Free Day on Montana Ave. in Santa Monica, CA. They’re beyond excited, and if you’re in Cali, you should be too. If you’ve never scouted out Montana Ave. before, here’s a list of the stores you might want to blow a mint on: Café Luxxe, Planet Blue, Pinkberry, Jeany, Dermalogica, London Sole, Benefit, Shabby Chic, Platino, Leona Edimston, Savannah, Anat B, and Khiels. Need a reminder, print this out and post it on your fridge!
  • Looking to buy some pretty, pretty jewelry to make you feel like a pretty, pretty princess? Good, because Tejani Jewelry has some of the most gorgeous handcrafted jewelry I’ve seen in a while. The pieces are chock full of jewels and would make any past-life harem girl swoon— ahem. My favorite piece out of the entire spring collection is the two tone pendant necklace with pink topaz, crystal, & glass. Tejani Jewelry is also looking out for all you bangle fanatics by offering a free bangle sizing kit so you don’t shell out and then realize you can’t get the bracelet over you’re hand—I hate when that happens!
  • Street fashion has become enormously popular in today’s fashion communities. We look to these stalked fashion-forward individuals for inspiration and in awe. We also like to inspire and awe other people, thus the reason we have wardrobe blogs and style-sharing sites. There’s a new site called Votour.com, which tosses both street fashion and our fashions on one site, and we get to vote on them. Elle photographer, Peter Miszuk, takes street fashion pictures in his free time, and you are given the chance to judge and rate all the fabulously dress wanders he finds. You can also join their beta version and throw your wardrobe choices on there to get others opinions.

That’s it for now. Maybe if I feel like I’m neglecting the publicists next week, I’ll do this again.

Ode to Mulberry’s Roxanne Tote

Chelsea Rae | Accessories, Handbags, Totes | Thursday, 21 February 2008

Pink Rock Candy, pinkrockcandy.net, Mulberry - Roxanne Toe, Peaches Geldof, Pixie Geldof

Oh Mulberry’s Roxanne Tote, how I love thee…

Your ginormousness would allow me to carry my life in an infinitely stylish bag. I could probably even hide a cute gentleman within, in the event that I see one to my liking. Carrying such objects would obviously necessitate the hiring of a great chiropractor, but this I will overlook. With such girth, I could hide modestly behind you like Peaches or gloat about your icy-freshness as does feisty Pixie. How wonderful you would be in my Easter basket (or as my Easter basket).

If you were mine, I would caress thy front pockets, and maybe place a lipstick or two within. And your gleaming facade— I would never be able to disguise my conceit with such a reflective bag at my side (good my hair is still in place).

Black, red, navy, or white, if the week were four days I would buy one for every day of the week, but since it’s not, I think I’ll ask the Easter Bunny to just bring me a black red navy white one.

I wounder if there is a Mulberry store near his bunny hole, or would he just purchase it online like the rest of us (after all he has no elves to build things for him). Excuse me while I go write a nice email to the Easter Bunny, making sure he receives my request in time for the big day!

Etro and the Pink Boots

Chelsea Rae | Accessories, Boots, Fall/Winter, Fashion Week, Shoes | Wednesday, 20 February 2008
Pink Rock Candy, pinkrockcandy.net, Etro fall/winter 2008, pink over the knee boots Leave it to Etro to make the most fabulous boots ever. This may be a giant lie, and I’m currently just completely stoked about the boots, but I have to hand it to designer Veronica Etro, PINK, THIGH-HIGH, LACE-UP, PLATFORM boots for Autumn/Winter 2008…wow!

Not everyone can pull that off, okay, actually almost no one can pull it off— black or charcoal over the knee boots maybe, but coral. I think not! As fresh as these boots are, I’d never wear them for fear of making my already stumpy legs look even stumpier. However I do advise those with giraffe length legs to grab a pair this fall because, why not?Mattel must be behind this.

This must be their counter attack to all those stripper-esque Bratz dolls.

Fashion Week Fix - Accessories

Chelsea Rae | Accessories, Fall/Winter, Fashion Week | Friday, 08 February 2008

New York Fashion Week is almost over, and if you actually want to base you Fall 2008 shopping on these shows alone, there are two extremely obvious trends. I swear a blind (visually challenged?) person could even see it.

Pink Rock Candy, pinkrockcandy.net, Fall 2008 Hats, Accessories

The first accessories trend is fur, and lots of it. But, I have two problems with fur. One is its expensive, except when its fake and then that’s just weird buying fake fur. Don’t ask me why, but something about fake fur is a little off to me. The other problem I have with fur is it comes from a skinned animal. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll steal a bite of a hamburger faster than the legendary Hamburgaler, and I’ve dissected more animals than I chose to count, but being able to pet my clothes like I would a small furry critter is strange. My great-grandmother has a mink shawl and the closure to the shawl is the paw of the mink, you have to laugh at how freaky that is.

If you aren’t quite a fan of fur, or just can’t afford it, then you should get yourself a hat. The truth is, hats are never out per se, they just change shapes. What are they shapes for Fall 2008?

Pick up a hat of any shape, and I’m sure it would be à la mode.

You could go for the girlie, limp version of the stove pipe hat (originally made fashionable by President Lincoln) à la Vera Wang. The beret, which has been seen all over the cat walks. You might want to buy some bongos because the beatnik thing might be coming back. At the 3.1 Phillip Lim show everything from biker to cowboy hats were rocked, while Temperley chose to bring back memories of my $300 speeding ticket. Who doesn’t love a good cop hat?

Don’t want to wear a hat? Get a headband. Wrap some string around your head, attach over sized flower, and go. Thank you Anna Sui! Also, if you manage to hit up Disney World/Land or just a Disney store, pick up a pair of mouse ears, and tell everyone you were inspired by Zac Posen (Min, Zacy Poo loves you!)

Win Diamonds from Lucky

Chelsea Rae | Accessories, Celebrities, Contests, Magazines | Tuesday, 08 January 2008
Pink Rock Candy, Lucky Magazine, Hayden Panettiere, Giveaway

Hayden Panettiere has been waltzing around in a great gold and diamond ring from Love Rocks NY. I think there was a rumor that her potential beau, Milo Ventimiglia (swoon!), bought it for her, but that’s beside the point. Hayden is also wearing the “Infinity” ring on the cover of the February 2008 issue of Lucky, and they’re giving one reader a chance to win Hayden’s entire cover outfit including the $1,800 “Infinity” ring.

Not the ring wearing type? Lucky is also giving away tons of diamonds in the “Lucky Breaks” section of the February issue to celebrate Valentine’s Day. You can enter to win one or all of the diamond giveaways by visiting the Lucky Breaks section on Lucky.com and entering your info.

For more information on Love Rocks NY visit www.loverocksny.com.
