Too Fab: CFDA Awards 2008

Chelsea Rae | Celebrities, Red Carpet | Tuesday, 03 June 2008

Another year means another CFDA awards ceremony. There are winners, losers, braggers, and spoilsports— but let’s face it, aside from knowing who won Menswear Designer of the Year (Tom Ford) and who won Womenswear Designer of the Year (Francisco Costa), not much matters except for who wore what. I flicked through over 100 pictures on Style.com, because my invite must have gotten lost in the mail— ha— and widdled it all down to MY favorite 10 plus 2.

  1. Erin Fetherston, in her own design: Aside from the little fact that Erin Fetherston is the cutest thing since My Little Pony, seeing her in a diaphanous floral number made my heart skip a beat while the fashion part of my brain lit up uncontrollably. She looks like the perfect flower nymph, ready to party her tush off at the CFDA awards.
  2. Chanel Iman with Calvin Klein Menswear’s Italo Zucchelli: She looks all grown up! Who knew an messy up-do and a purple Calvin Klein gown could make Chanel look like the beautiful woman she’s growing up to be? This isn’t a ’she made herself look matronly’ situation— she looks perfect for her age. Also, most people cant pull off a strip of jewels down the center of a dress, but considering she’s tiny, being cut in half laterally is no problem for her.
  3. Kasia Struss, in Rodarte: There’s something about the Fall/Winter 2008 Rodarte collection that makes me swoon, no matter who I see wearing it. I love the perfectly coiffed yet completely ripped apart look of the collection, and the Grecian-esque key hole is sexy and not trashy like it was on Christina Aguilera when she showed some under-boob cleavage at some MTV award show during her X-Tina days.
  4. Yigal Azrouël with Katie Lee Joel, in his design: As hard as it may be to ignore Yigal because he’s so cute, let’s focus on the bottom of the dress he designed being worn by Miss Katie Lee Joel. The layered scallop layers either remind me of giant fish scales or flower petals. Luckily, I like both ideas and think the dress is wonderful!
  5. Susan and Zac Posen: It’s Zac Posen, need I say more? Three things to note: bow tie, 3/4 length sleeves, and Momma Posen— I love it when guys bring their moms to award ceremonies. It makes me melt a bit, even if Zac and I aren’t playing for the same team, I love him to death!
  6. Famke Janssen, in David Meister: Her body makes me jealous because she’s beyond fit, and she can actually pull off the one-shoulder look because, unlike some of us, she doesn’t have that terrible plague I like to call armpit fat. Damn her!
  7. Daiane Conterato and Jen Brill, both in Proenza Schouler: I have no idea who these two are, so shoot me, but they look extraordinary in there Proenza frocks, and Jen’s face is either really, really angry or totally fierce.
  8. Maggie Gyllenhaal, in Proenza Schouler: Jodhpurs terrify me beyond belief. They’re right up there with shorts, but Maggie G wears them effortlessly. She isn’t quite as dressy as most of the people at the ceremony, but she still looks beyond chic!
  9. Ashley Olsen, in Calvin Klein Collection: I’m starting to think Ashley only smiles when Mary Kate isn’t around, but that’s beside the point. I know she looks like a matador, but anyone who can look like they’re going to fight a bull and still make me jealous gets an A+ in my book.
  10. Kim Cattrall, in Monique Lhuillier, with Tom Ford, in his own design: Maybe I’m still coming down from my Sex-and-the-City-movie high or Tom Ford’s sexiness is just skewing my view of this photo, but I think both Mr. Ford and Ms. Cattrall look suberb. Did I mention Tom’s a WINNER!

Sean Avery Peeves Me

Pink Rock Candy, Sean Avery, Vera Wang, dancing at Fifi awards

Sean Avery makes me so angry. Actually, he not only makes me angry, but he makes me seethe. Usually, I don’t let people get under my skin like this, especially people I don’t know, but he just needs to take some time and stay off my computer screen especially when I’m looking at something that doesn’t have to do with hockey. Oh, and did I mention he used to be on the Detroit Red Wings, my favorite hockey team since birth, but he isn’t any more— nope, he and Shanahan trucked their slapshotting asses to the New York Rangers, but let’s stick to his fashion related incidents shall we?

Mr. Avery…where shall I begin, how about the fact that he’s interning at a little magazine I call Vogue? Why? I couldn’t tell you, but I can tell you that not only is he interning at Vogue, he’s a big hockey star mind you, but he’s getting paid to be an intern. Did I mention he’s a big hockey star with lots and lots of money? There are very few, and I mean maybe no, interns at Vogue that get paid.

My next grievance is, Vogue will be taking him to all the couture shows, so he can flirt with all the pretty models learn something about fashion. Seriously…

Also, if you flip to page 78 in the June issue of US Vogue. Start from the top and just let your eyes float to the bottom. Now tell me, what seems to be awkward about this page? Yup, there’s Avery’s black-eyed mug smack dab in the middle of Chanel Iman and Behati Prinsloo. PLEASE VOGUE STEP UP YOUR GAME!

The pièce de resistence is the picture to the left. That’s Mr. Avery at the Fifi Awards dancing with Vera Wang. Why exactly is he there? I have no idea He’s her date. Was this the straw that broke the camels back? HELL YES!

Excuse me while I calm down a bit. Go Red Wings!

Why i-D? Why?

Pink Rock Candy, i-D magazine cover, June 2008, Mariah Carey

Dear i-D,

I have a bone to pick with you. What is up with this Mimi fiasco? I happen to spend more than enough money buying magazines and an exorbitant amount of time reading them both in print format and online, for those I don’t happen to purchase. Over the years I have matured and my taste in what I want to see in fashion magazines has changed.

I breeze over the fitness and life stories sections, glance at the beauty section, concentrate mostly on the fashion editorials and ads, and very rarely do I even skim the cover story concerning whatever celeb is hocking their newest project that month. This, at least, is the format for most US magazines, but i-D, I usually love reading you and your Euro mates because there is a lot more edge to your editorials and less focus on what celebrities think about fashion, so why is Mariah Carey on your cover?

Sure, when I was younger I would sing “Heartbreaker” over and over while dreaming that one day I would be able to hit those high notes. I even watched Glitter more than once, and I consider myself to have pretty good taste in movies. Unfortunately, somewhere between that and “We Belong Together,” I realized midriff tops and daisy dukes were not cute on anyone and stopped caring. When I realized she put Wentworth Miller in “We Belong Together,” I was a but stoked, but this was after the fact because I didn’t know who Wenty was until I saw him on Prison Break. I take Mariah for who she is, but I know for a fact she is not, I repeat NOT, edgy fashion mag material.

I’m not sure how a magazine can go from calling Agyness Deyn, who is almost my generation’s new Kate Moss, an ICON, to putting Mariah Carey in a skimpy black bikini on the cover the next month. Is this your tactic to keep us fashionistas on our toes? Are you trying to start bring back the 90s ab-baring trend Mariah is oh-so-good at? I’m so confused!

Will I ever be able to see ‘(insert month) issue of i-D’ in a thread on The Fashion Spot and be excited knowing I’m going to experience a fantasia of fashion related eye-gasms? I don’t think so. Now, behind every link I’m going to think I’ll have another “what the fuck” moment followed by a month a great concern?

Please next month, recommence with your normal awesomeness, or else I may have to shun you forever.

Superheroes and the Costume Institute Gala

Chelsea Rae | Celebrities, Red Carpet | Tuesday, 06 May 2008

This year, for me, the Costume Institute Gala is less about the gorgeous gowns and suits everyone was bound to wear, but being that it had a Superhero theme, I was excited about the vaguely superhero costume. Not everyone knew how to translate this theme into a coordinating ensemble, and that’s okay, but I decided to show you my top picks out of those heroic and villainous individuals who went succeeded in this super feat.

My Top 35 favorites

  1. Karl Lagerfeld: Let’s just face it. KL is the only person that is a real live superhero, at least I know he’s my hero. The people he dressed were some of my favorites, an he wore a glitter suit jacket, come on!
  2. Anna Wintour in Chanel Haute Couture: If I were to give Winny a super power, it would be having the power to make people’s ears bleed with her siren scream because they botched a run through, and having heat vision. Come to think of it, she might already have these powers!
  3. Zac Posen and Kate Mara in Zac Posen: These two might not have gone the way of wearing clothes with shapes reminiscent of everyone’s favorite comic book heroes, but the colors they wore screamed, superhero.
  4. Max and Lubov Azria: Max is obviously a fan of then “Man of Steel” and Lubov added a cute comic book touch to her Herve Leger bandage dress. That’s how you work a theme without looking as if you’ve dressed for Halloween!
  5. Natasha Voinovic in Alexander Wang: Leave it to Alexander Wang to create the most wearable, vampy super-outfit of the bunch. Natasha could go straight to some disco after the Gala, and she probably did!
  6. Caroline Tretini: I’m not sure who she’s wearing, but her dress looks like something Poison Ivy would wear except in black.
  7. Daphne Guinness and L’Wren Scott: Both Daphne and L’Wren look like sexy evil villains who got dressed to go to some ball, hmmm.
  8. Rachel Bilson in Calvin Klein Collection: I haven’t yet decided if Rachel’s dress is more reminiscent of a black version of Aquaman’s wet suit or Iron Man’s robot suit. Either way, she’s totally ready to protect and serve!
  9. Victoria Beckham in Giorgio Armani: If her outfit doesn’t scream EVIL VIXEN GONE GOOD, I’m not sure what does. It’s like when Batman dated Catwoman, but her evil urges (isn’t that a song) couldn’t be suppressed.
  10. Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen in Diane von Furstenberg and Christian Louboutin: I know this is three people, but in the picture they’re perfect together. The two Olsens look almost undead/robotic which should inspire comic book writers to make a comic about them, and Christian is just out of this world and could be on just about any list I make. Dreaming of Superheroes: Met Ball Style

Chelsea Rae | Celebrities, News, Red Carpet | Monday, 05 May 2008

Pink Rock Candy, Style.com, Met Costume Ball, Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy, Jessica Stam

School is driving me insane. I’m almost done, I have one actual class left and then finals, but just having to sit through an entire class of teachers scrounging for things to do just makes me furious. Instead of notes, I find myself drawing sunglasses for the imaginary sun that’s beating on my face in the cell like classes, writing lyrics to the songs I wish I was listening to while driving in my nonexistent convertible, and imagining the fantasia of costumes I’m sure to see in the pictures from the Met Costume Ball.

Its tonight, and right about now everyone attending is scrambling to get ready , but all that’s going through my head is, “The Olsens in DVF. What?” Apparently though, E! has caught on to the gravity of the Costume Institutes’s Benefit Ball red carpet. Not only can Anna Wintour allegedly demand that Maggie Gyllenhaal is present, wearing Som, and strutting her stuff on Peter Som’s arm (according to Fashionista), but it is a night when designers have multiple high-status dates and everyone, or at least the fun ones will be dressed in a superhero fashion. This may excite me because I’m still coming down from my Iron Man high, but I’m stoked none the less.

E! is going to be front and center on the red carpet rubbing shoulders with celebs, models, designers, and Vogue staffers alike; they’re pretty much doing what most little Wintour loving girls dream to do, and on May 8th at 8PM they are going to do a Met Ball special that according to Fashion Week Daily is tentatively called “The E! Met Special.”

They’ll probably completely trash all the crazy get-ups I’m sure to love, but I think I’ll watch anyway. There’s always a funny joke or two strategically placed in each segment by the all-controlling Hollywood writers.

Trying to figure out who’s coming with who and wearing what? Here’s a little insight:

  • Anna Wintour and Audrey Tatou- Chanel
  • Maggie Gyllenhaal - Peter Som
  • Jourdan Dunn - Bill Blass
  • Tilda Swinton - Prada
  • Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen - Diane von Furstenberg
  • Sofia Coppola, Karen Elson, Rachel Feinstein, and Helena Christensen - Marc Jacobs
  • Scarlett Johansson and Iman and David Bowie - Dolce and Gabbana
  • Molly Sims, Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady - Versace
  • Natasha Poly - Phi
  • Kate Moss - Stella McCartney
  • Lily Donaldson and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley - Burberry
  • Sasha Pinovarova - Rag & Bone
  • Jessica Stam - Proenza Schouler
  • Coco Rocha, Anja Rubik, and Joy Bryant - Pucci
