It started with a myspace picture. As shallow as it may seem, having a pretty or professional looking myspace picture is a great way to draw people in— beauty is a magnet. That’s how I found Laura Dawson, and once I clicked on the little picture I was transported to a profile chock full of pretty and visually interesting garments from coats to shorts.

NY based designer, Laura Dawson, would describe her clothes as “avant garde” which is usually the term I like to save for my kooky, yet amazing, high school art teacher who wore two completely different cowboy boots on a regular basis (she also had Jim Morrison sleep on her floor for a month, but thats a different story). Dawson’s clothes are cutting edge yet timeless. No matter how trends change, it would be completely acceptable to wear her asymmetrical Una Wool Coat’ any time it started to get a bit nippy.

Ms. Dawson’s ‘Una Coat’ is brilliant and maybe even a bit avant garde, but I wouldn’t quite put the ‘Flame Hoodie and ‘Bubble Shorts’ in the avant garde pile. Though, its fair to say, everyone does need a pair of fun shorts (which also come in black for more basic purposes) and a warm hoodie or ten— proving not only can Laura Dawson do fun and unconventional but she can also satisfy your basic needs. Its almost mind-boggling to imagine something being avant garde and classic at the same time, but Dawson does an amazing job creating garments that seem to fit the bill.

For more information on Laura Dawson visit lauradawson.com or myspace.com/lauradawsondesign and visit the Laura Dawson online boutique to see what other fab clothes are available for purchase.

Not a fan of bright color combos and crazy patterns, avert your eyes and make sure you never fall for the nu rave trend. I for one am oddly attracted to bright colors and things that are so wrong, they’re right. That is the basis of clothing brand Naked Ape. According to them, they are just a bunch of people who come together “for the love of making stuff and having fun together”, but just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I find their “stuff” to be so much more.

Very rarely do you feel a bond with a garment unless you had something to do with its creation, and even then its questionable. However, the shear wrongness (is that a word?) of the eclectic patterns on the clothing made me swoon in a way I hadn’t in quite a while. Their pieces are urban yet nu rave, comfortable yet chic.

My favorite pieces include:

The ‘Forynja Dress’, <del>265.0 €</del> SOLDOUT- I rarely like dresses with hoods, but the loose fit of the dress works well with the drappy hood.

The ‘Ponies Hoodie’, 110.0 € – Its My Little Pony gone nu rave, what more is there to say?

The ‘Heartbreaker’ t-shirt, 40.0 € – Who can resist half-naked rockers in leopard pants? I know I can’t!

The ‘Ponies & Yetis Snood’, 55.0 € – It’s winter and we all need a good hood-scarf. Except my idea of a snood is something like a hair-net, who knew! Oh, and its MLP meets the ever illusive yeti, come on…

The only thing to bring me down from this fashion high was finding out Naked Ape is based in Iceland, and realizing the USD/EUR exchange rate is crazy (1€ is about $1.50 USD).

For more information on Naked Ape visit their website: http://dontbenaked.com/.

I have been waiting for Snakes & Suits to officially open for what seems like forever. On their myspace page, they have been touting the dreaded, “coming soon” sign for as long as I can remember, but finally it has launched and I’m stoked. The question in a lot of your heads is probably, “What the hell is Snakes & Suits?” The answer to that is simple, and complicated at the same time. The short answer is S&S is a clothing line and a record label all rolled up into one nice package.

Currently, they’re selling t-shirts and hoodies, you know the standard start-up indie line gear. The difference between all t-shirts is whats on them, or not on them for that matter. The art and graphics on the tees and hoodies are really unique and in the case of the ‘Storms’ t-shirt a bit finger-painty mixed with splash of Jackson Pollock (if he went minimalist). Many of the items are very limited, as in they only have 75 of them, so impulsive buyers have the advantage.

As for the record label aspect of Snakes & Suits, they are taking a new-age approach to putting out music. They are releasing all albums via FREE mp3 downloads. They are starting by re-releasing the out-of-print Gatsbys American Dream EP, In The Land Of Lost Monsters. Included in the download is not only 7 great songs from GAD, but the album cover, and a little message from guitarist, Bobby Darling.

You can shop Snakes & Suits on their webstore, download the Gatsbys American Dream EP in their myspace. Above all make sure to “smile big and keep your hearts over money!”

For more information on Gatsbys American Dream, visit their website or myspace.

This might be one of those times for me, but I’m going to blame Jay-Z for this is anyone asks why I’m still sporting the cranium. Perhaps if Rocawear would have come out with this hoodie sooner, I wouldn’t have this rebellious streak, but I really like this hoodie. Plus, skulls always remind me of pirates, and I still aspire to be a pirate when I grow up because I just like the idea of saying I’m swashbuckling.

To be honest, I considered buying a similar hoodie from the guys section a while ago, since there wasn’t a skull collection for women, but now Jay-Z has caught on (a little late maybe, but caught on none the less).

The hoodie is 3/4 sleeves, tunic length, and reversible. The green side is a large dot printed skull, which wouldn’t be my personal favorite side, but may appeal to some. The hood if you actually want to use the hood to keep out weather it does have drawstrings, but I always end up ripping them out.

We Wanna Know: What trends will you be wearing that might make some fashionista’s might wag their finger at you?

The other day I was driving to this super far mall with my siblings. It was a really nice day, and we had the windows down and were blaring the radio. (I know, so obnoxious.) Blythe and I are obsessed with Amy Winehouse. The obsession is pretty much because she laughs in the face of her problems, but I digress. “Rehab” came on the radio and we realized Jay-Z was in the background, so we turned it up louder. Apparently, he did a remix to Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab”. It was sort of amazing, and my siblings and I started talking about how much we respect Jay-Z. He doesn’t pigeon hole himself into solely being a rapper or even to solely represent black culture. We all decided if one of our children ever told us they wanted to be like 50 Cent we’d flip, but if they said they wanted to be like Jay-Z we’d totally be okay with it.

Since I’ve officially decided I really respect Jay-Z, I went on Rocawear.com to see what clothes I liked. Even though my style is not typically “urban”, I think there is a way to wear any of clothing line no matter the style and make it you. I figured jeans are always a good place to start with anyones wardrobe. I found a super cute pair of capri’s called the Roc Bling Capri. Ever since I saw SJP in her Bitten capri’s I’ve swooned over every pair of jean capris I’ve seen. I then decided to find a great top to go with the capris. I found two tops, and couldn’t make a desicion as to which I like better. The first is called the Thermal Roc Top and is super casual. I like the fun all over print, and its a hoodie. That pretty much covers all the bases of my perfect henley type top. The other top is a spagetti strap tank that can be dressed up or down. Its called the Dry Sun Tunic Top. I love the braided straps, and right now I’m totally obsessed with anything that has an empire waist. The fact that it also comes in teal with a white, brown and teal braid makes me even more stoked. To finish the look off I needed to find accessories. So I snooped some more and eventually laid eyes on super hot white peep-toe pumps and a pair of rad sunglasses. The best part of either outfit is I would feel completely comfortable wearing them.

The first thing that comes to mind when I think hoodie dress is awesome. I love hoodies more than anything, and dresses are all too perfect for warmer weather (and cold weather when you’re inside with heaters). Unfortunately a lot of hoodie dresses have elastic in super awkward places to actually make it look like a dress. I personally don’t like that aspect of the hoodie dress, but I just found a super cute one on PatriciaField.com. It’s called the Napolean Hoodie by Rojas. It’s great because the elastic on the front is hidden and it only shows on the back. This gives you the hourglass shape that the other hoodie dresses go for, but this one doesn’t look cheap. I also like the military style buttons on the front. I’m pretty sure Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance has started a trend with the Marching band/military style jackets. I also love the puffed sleeves because it adds a little girlie flare to an otherwise masculine hoodie. The hoodie also comes in grey, but I think I like the navy the best.

I’m way envious of people who can sew. My mom tried to teach me when I was in grade school, but the only thing I ended up making was sucky beanie baby-esque things for one my brother’s 1st grade projects. I have tons of patterns for clothes I was going to make, but that fell through; I can’t even figure out how to thread the bobbin anymore. My mom is a great seamstress. She has made dresses for both me and Blythe for homecoming and she made the skirt of my first prom dress after an unfortunate internet shopping experience. This envy tends to steer me to clothing companies that remake vintage clothes like the one Eve Chrust created called eve*lynn. I think being able to take something you find at a thrift store or Salvation Army and make it totally stellar is something everyone should learn to do. Eve started selling eve*lynn to classmates in 2004. She ran her business right out of her college dorm room, and just last year started her first RTW line. She likes to experiment with different fabrics like the fabric of a vintage tee, silks, and the ultra soft modal knit fabric. I think she does a great job of creating a unique rock-n-roll/city girl look.
Right now, in her webstore are tons of great looks. There is the super-rock Vintage Skull Sweater, which I adore. Since the sweaters are re-invented vintage sweaters, all of them are completely unique, and the hot skull design was created just for eve*lynn by graffiti designer Ezo. V-necks are always something I like to keep in my closet, so the Silk V-Neck Top really made me swoon, and the fact that it’s silk doesn’t hurt. If you want a little bit of leather without looking like a biker, (unless that’s what your going for) the Leather Trimmed Bell Sleeve Top is great. It’s perfect to toss over cute leggings or jeans (since it’s still a little chilly on the east coast). When I visited the webstore for the first time, the Vintage Overdyed Sweatshirt first caught my eye. It’s a v-neck hoodie with a chic vintage brooch. Many hoodies can be sort of manly, but the brooch keeps it very girlie. They also come in assorted colors which means you don’t know which color hoodie might show up on your doorstep. Eve is always creating new designs, so you never know what will show up. Make sure you keep a look out for some of her great new designs!

If you haven’t realized from the 165.3 other times I’ve said it, I absolutely love new things. It could be a new TV show, movie, band, clothing designer, food, or even the cute new guy that works and the drugstore down the street. Fresh things just excite me, and MySpace is a great way to find things I would never have known about in regular situations. Yes, these novel finds do come from lots of time spent lurking on the interweb, but that’s just a hazard of the job. On one of my lurking excursions, I found this great clothing brand called pH by Phillia. The clothes are a great mix between mod, space, and traditional asian dress.
pH by Phillia was started by Phillia Downs and bestie for life Nanako Mori. Phillia was originally an ultra smart science geek, like yours truly (she got her B.S in Biology and Genetics), and also like me, she found that her true calling was a more artistic one. With a little prodding from her friends and family, she started pH by Phillia and eventually got the thrilling chance to show at a fashion show. After a couple more fashion shows and a magazine feature or two under her belt, Phillia picked-up and moved to NY. Amazingly, this is her first official spring line and I love it.
I’m completely ga-ga over some of her mini’s. They’re really girlie and frilly, but still have the ability to remain casual. I’m a giant fan of accentuating my waist and the obi-esque bands in bright red are perfect for that. You can also see they’re signature equal sign on a lot of the bands which I find really fun. I love the allusions the science and math in the brand name and the clothing itself.

A few weeks ago I got a killer speeding ticket, and when I say killer, I mean annihilation. It was my first and I was totally scared; my hands were shaking so bad. I’ve sort of learned my lesson, but in the words of Ricky Bobby, “I wanna go fast!” My parents have taken to calling me Speed Racer and I was completely stoked when I saw some of their pieces were called speed racer. The dress and hoodie not only have an awesome name but they’re so cute.
Wendy created her line of women’s and men’s clothing called Built by Wendy in 1991. Though she had been making clothing for almost four years, Wendy became well known for her guitar straps in the mid-90s. After she gained this notoriety, Wendy was able to expand on her first love of clothing making and opened her first store in “Little Italy” in 1998, and in 2005 she was able to open two more stores in Brooklyn and Los Angeles. Not only does Wendy make great clothes for men and women, she makes baby clothes, wrote her own sewing book called Sew U, and designed a line of sewing patterns with Simplicity called “Built by YOU”.
Wendy’s spring line is chock full of ultra-cute nautical style clothing. It’s ever so apparent how drawn I am to this style of clothing so you can understand my excitement when I found Built by Wendy. Though the entire collection doesn’t come out until 2/15/07, some clothes are available now. You can also take a peek at her spring collection lookbook to see what’s ahead. To stay updated on Built by Wendy you can sign-up for her newsletter.
There’s a burst of excitement I get when I know I’m wearing at least 3 different colors on one item of clothing (and it’s not totally vomit-worthy). It’s like the old Sweetarts ad where the little girl is prim and proper on one side and crazy on the other, except this is 152.6 times better without having two different hair styles (not cute). I’m no good at fitting in and these pieces will certainly keep all eyes on me. Pick up your jaws and check this gear out.

Everyone has those days when you feel like you have nothing to wear and just throw on a hoodie, but hoodies don’t always have to be the cure for a bad fashion day. Hoodies can be the fashion. By simply taking a stroll through the mall anyone can see how much the hoodie has become a style staple. Almost every store sells them, but what style is your hoodie style? -You can go with the urban (and what I find fairly loud) fashion of such clothing companies as Billionaire Boys Club or Bape (don’t worry you won’t have to pay $300 for the real thing, there are knock-offs everywhere). -You can be very girlie with cute hoodies from Charlotte-Russe and Wet Seal. -You could even rock out in hoodies from places like Hot Topic or Delia*s. Here’s my top picks from each:
