Pink Rock Candy, Louis Vuitton Fall 2010, Full Skirts

Last week, I decided to watch How to Marry a Millionaire with my mom followed by a Mad Men marathon, to get me out of a funk. After, oohing and ahhing over the clothes, I realized if I could go back in time, one of the only eras I would visit is the 50s/early-60s.

I love over-the-top circle skirts, and the way girdles made everyone’s waist look like it was the size of my pinky— I’m not a fan of the pain, though.

I started thinking about where I could get that look without heading to a costume shop. My mind quickly flashed to the Louis Vuitton Fall 2010 collection. I’ve been tweeting obsessively about the big, bold and sometimes leather, skirts for almost a month. They make me want fall so badly, but for over $2,000, I’m going to have to pass on the LV version.

Here are my top, less expensive, picks:
1. We Love Vera Licorice Lanes Skirt, $78
2. Sparkle & Fade Full Voile Skirt, $58
3. French Connection Otis Skirt, $54

Wear It Now: Be a Slouch

Very rarely am I afraid of anything, but I will admit, not too long ago, I was afraid‚ nay, terrified— of shorts. Yes, even skinny girls are susceptible to irrational clothes phobias. I thought my thighs were too fat, and the spread-out sack of lard they became when I sat, don’t even get me started! Like all fears, this one was meant to be overcome.

With the help of Spring’s slouchy-fit shorts trend, I’m now a card carrying member of the shorts club— I have three pair, a good number for the Duchess of Dresses, if I do say so myself.

Shorts with a slouchy fit and even a paper bag waist are pretty much universally flattering. It allows for a little extra width— imagined or not— on the thighs, and your legs won’t feel as if the circulation will be cut off at any moment.

When shopping for this style, look for shorts in a soft cotton, linen or silk blend. The pleats or slouching effect will fall much better, not to mention those fabrics are very work-appropriate

Also, if you’re a girl who likes to go up a size to avoid the thigh squeezing look of normal shorts, avoid doing that with the slouchy-fit, else risk looking like you’re playing in Mommy’s clothes.

Time to face your fears, ladies. You too could have a membership to the shorts club, starting at less that $20.
