Riding the train one morning, I couldn’t help but overhear two college-age ladies on their way to work/internships. One was starting that day, and had never met her new colleagues, much less, asked what the dress code was.
“I wanted to wear this pretty white eyelet dress,” said the newly employed fashion PR intern, “but I thought it would be too much, so I wore this.”
She was wearing the unofficial PR dress code of all black and flats.
This got me thinking, once the interview is out of the way, and you’ve scored the internship of your dreams, what do you wear on your first day interning in the fashion world?
On my first day, I generally wear a skirt or a dress. I keep my hems on the long side, and my heels on the short side— pack flats if you don’t want to wear them all day.
I shy away from anything too flashy, meaning my layers of necklaces and bangles are left at home. The last thing any newbie wants is for everyone to know you’re lost in the office because your jewels jingle like a cat’s collar.
Make sure your bag fits the internship you have. If you know you’ll be running around town picking up sample jewelry, a larger bag would be perfect so you can stuff the smaller bags in your big bag. However, if you’ll be juggling garment bags all day. Carry something smaller with a longer strap (in-case) you have to throw it across you body for easier handling. If you’re sitting at a desk all day, your bag choices increase exponentially.
Last, but not least, don’t forget to bring a notepad so you can scribble down anything from office procedures to a to-do list.
