Still Playing in My Mom’s Clothes

Chelsea Rae | My Style, Skirts, Swimwear | Thursday, 12 June 2008
Pink Rock Candy, Chelsea Rae, pink skirt and vintage blue striped swimsuit

Most days I scold my mom for wearing matching pants suits, and she reciprocates by telling me I have on too many different colors, that black and brown doesn’t match, or that I should be wearing pantyhose to work— blah! Though we may have our differences when it comes to clothes, she has an awesome shoe collection, and more often than not, I find myself playing in her shoes like I did when I was little. Then there are those times when I think, wow, my mom is so jazzy— because that’s what I want to be when I’m 40-something, jazzy— and yesterday was one of those days.

After bulldozing through the pile of clothes that I call the floor of my closet, I found this adorable one-piece swimsuit that was my mom’s from a little more than 20 years ago. Aside from the fact that I had to stretch out the straps a bit because one-piece swimsuits don’t ever fit my long torso properly, I loved the suit and knew it would be really cute under something, but I didn’t quite know what. It actually looked fantastic under most of the bottoms I paired it with, but I settled on my hot pink skirt, because, why not… right?

When my mom saw me in her swimsuit, her initial reaction was “Where did you find that?” and then she said something along the lines of “You look like a little girl dressing up like a princess.” I personally don’t see it, and was slightly offended considering she told me a certain guy is afraid to date me because I was A) younger and B) “the princess of the family”— what does that even mean? In light of the princess comment, I decided Disney should model a princess after me and she can save the world one headband at a time!

Are you ever surprised how fashionable someone in your family is?

Vintage Dior on YOOX.com

Pink Rock Candy, 1970s Christian Dior sunglasses frames

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Christian Dior? At the risk of sounding like Kimora Lee Simmons or Christian Siriano, I must say the first word I think of is “FABULOUS!” Hence the reason, I was beyond excited to learn YOOX.com will be selling vintage Dior items starting June 4th. The more than 20 vintage items being sold were created in the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s, and I knew there was bound to be at least one piece I’d fall desperately in love with and lust over for a minimum of a month, and boy, was I right!

As I scrolled through the lookbook, I imagined caressing dazzling film actress, Maria Felix’s, haute couture cocktail dress from ‘67 or being blinded by the gleam of an amethyst necklace owned by Adriana Grassi, correspondent for publications such as Women’s Wear Daily and Gap Magazine. However, it wasn’t the perfectly cut dresses or the glittering jewels that piqued my fancy, it was a chic pair of sunglasses from the 70s.

Through some combination of the ombre frames, the unique shape, and my love of sunnies, I knew these glasses were made for me— better yet, if reincarnation really does exist, I was the proud owner of this pair of sunglasses, or at least a pair like this, during the 70s, in one of my past lives.

Unfortunately for me, I don’t have $700 to spend on anything, much less a pair of sunnies. So, I’m destined to a life, or month, or week, of irrational lusting. The kind where you talk about the object of your affection until the ears of everyone around you bleed. Luckily, by the time their oraphuses heal, your friends and family will have forgiven you, and you’ll be back to normal and ready to obsess over something else!

The sale officially launches on YOOX.com, June 4th and is expected to run through July.

Time for Me to Cover Up (For Now)

Long Torso Strawberry One-piece Bandeau_%37.50Each year, I like 158.3% of women (yes, that’s all and then some), have the same problem. Summer is nearing faster than expected and my swimsuits from last year are annihilated from hardcore pool and beach usage. What do we do? We go to the stores pick out the cutest swimsuit we can find and then sit in the dressing room criticizing every imperfection. Swimsuit shopping is not fun, but it’s something we have to do. I don’t have a solution to this problem other than shopping online and doing the body critique at home. But, while I was surfing the web, I found something that made me truly happy. Delia*s has a great set of extended torso one-piece swimsuits for girls (like me) with long torsos. Anyone who has a long torso knows how difficult it is to wear one-pieces because either the swimsuit is too big in the boobs and bum section while it fits your torso, or you buy the size that fits your “lovely lady lumps” but your torso is too long and you risk your bits and pieces falling out. For this reason I have been a bikini girl since who knows when, but I think I might be sporting a one-piece this summer. I love tis strawberry bandeau one-piece because it has cut-outs so I won’t feel too covered up. Delia*s not only has really cute one-pieces but tons of different types of swimsuits for all your covering or uncovering needs.
