“Get Jobs in Offices, and Wake Up For The Morning Commute”

Chelsea Rae | Outfits, Shirts, Skirts, Tank Tops | Wednesday, 02 July 2008

Pink Rock Candy, Chelsea Rae

I find great pleasure in working. I know that sounds quite odd, but the fact of the matter is, I like to shop and with out money I can’t shop and without work I have no money, hence the reason I like work. Did that make sense? I have two quasi jobs, one is an office job and the other is being a hostess/whatever else needs to be done at a bistro by my house. For the most part, working in an office and a restaurant doesn’t leave much room for outfit creativity, but for both jobs I do try to bring my own personal touches into the standard semi-professional look.

The general rules I, and I assume most people, was taught about dressing professionally are:

1) Black is always a good choice.

2) Don’t wear crazy color nail polish (i.e. Black, Bright Orange, Electric Blue, anything fun).

3) Pantyhose…

4) Cover your shoulders “The office is always freezing anyway…”

There are more rules, but for the most part I don’t follow these four so why would I follow the others? Actually, I do follow the first, because black pretty much works with every situation. Sometimes I feel bad about wearing navy nail polish to my office job, but it happens anyway. I hate pantyhose, especially when they’re flesh tone, and I only make sure I’m wearing sleeves at my office job, though it isn’t always cold in the office.

The outfit at left is a classic example of something I’d wear to both jobs, with minor adjustments (fyi…sometimes I like to sing MGMT’s “Time to Pretend” before work and act like I could be as frivolous as the song says). Sure the skirt is black (actually black and brown), but the pattern is really fun and fits into my tribal-themed summer. Wearing it with a burnout tank top makes it a little more relaxed, and throwing on a sparkly headband and the bright yellow necklace my little brother made, keeps me feeling and looking young and fun.

Now for the adjustments. For my office job, I would wear a grandpa cardigan over it. It doesn’t really matter what color, since the skirt is black and the top is white, so anything would match. And, for my hostessing job, I’d have to change my cute gladiator heels to flats for practicallity’s sake. Standing in 5″ heels for 6-7 hours straight is a bitch!

Which office dress rules do you follow when you head to work and which ones do you like to kick to the curb?

p.s. I’ve been invited to join a few new sites including: Indies United (from Fashion Indie), Lookbook.nu, and Modpass so if you’re on any of them add me. I promise I’m going to figure out someything cool to do with them other than just having them sit and gather webdust!

Shirts that Match Your Personality

Chelsea Rae | FBnK, Shirts, T-Shirts, Tank Tops | Wednesday, 05 September 2007

Quality or quantity? The debate has been going on for who knows how long. Recently, I figure out the answer.

FBnK!

Actually, my answer is both, but there is rarely a time you can have both unless you’re willing to shell out mucho dinero, which most can’t do very often. Luckily for t-shirt lovers around the world, FBnK (Foxy, Bunny, and Kitty) isn’t willing to sacrifice the quality of their tees, but they also like to keep the prices affordable for all. Their three main qualifications when designing new products is style, fit, and material/construction quality, and we love that about them.

Though FBnK is all about quality, they also focus on uniqueness and who their customers really are. All of their products are limited edition so you probably won’t have to worry about the girl in front of you in class wearing the same shirt.

Not only do they realize each of their customers are unique, they also find their “three girls” (Foxy, Bunny, & Kitty) tend to emitted their own personality too. The cool thing is many times friends and customers tend to gravitate toward one girl or another unwittingly. Here is how the ladies describe the three girls:

“Foxy has a witty personality, she’s clever and is quick with a joke, a dry sense of humor that keeps those around her engaged.

Bunny, is the quiet one of the group, but whose charm makes those around her quickly forget that she may be a bit shy. But no matter how shy she may get, her cute and sweet nature wins over friends everywhere she goes.

Kitty loves, loves, loves to play, the social coordinator. There is never a dull moment with Kitty, and she keeps the rest of us on our toes with her curious and mischievous nature.”

When I first saw the shirts I loved all the Foxy shirts, and ironically when I read the different personalities Foxy is the one that sounds most like me. So which girl are you?

It’s Back!

Remember that swoon-worthy, limited-edition tee that Stella McCartney created for the Oxfam booth at Glastonbury I talked about a while ago? Well, its not so limited edition anymore. Whether you were actually able to go to Glastonbury, but wasn’t able to get your hands on one of these, or if you’re like me and live across the pond (or elsewhere) and couldn’t make it to Glasto, you can get your Stella McCartney tee from yoox.com starting next Tuesday for $50. Like the tees sold at Glastonbury, all the proceeds go to Oxfam.

I love when popular demand throws limited-edition out the window!

Music, Tees, and Myspace

Chelsea Rae | Shirts, T-Shirts, Tank Tops | Wednesday, 20 June 2007

Stella McCartney Glastonbury TankYesterday I read on Vogue.uk Stella McCartney has designed a tank for UK’s Glastonbury Festival (the biggest music festival in the UK). The tank is ultra hippie chic and screams “peace and love”. Stella says the design was inspired by “all the Seventies airbrushed T-shirts my mum and dad used to get made.” There are only going to be 5,000 printed, and you can only buy them at the Oxfam stall at Glastonbury. Even though the tanks are super limited that doesn’t bum me out. The thing that gets me down is I don’t live in the UK, and even if I did if I haven’t snapped up tickets yet I won’t be able to because they’re sold out. So, instead of creating a game plan to lurk ebay after Glastonbury hoping one of the tanks will show up for a billion dollars, I decided to do the next best thing. I scoured through our friends on MySpace and found some great t-shirts for everyone.

Live & Love Tee Disco Night Lights Tee Fashionista Tee

One of my favorite t-shirt companies is Glamour Kills. I’ve talked about them before, but they just released their new line of tees. One of those tees is the Live & Love Tee. I’m also obsessed with their Fashionista Tee and the mondo colorful Disco Night Lights Tee. GK also sponsor a ton of great bands like Cobra Starship, The Higher, Boys Like Girls, The Used, Saosin, Cartel, and 1997 which makes me love them even more (see all of the bands on the Glamour Kills MySpace).

Hawaii Sunshine Tee Rose Asphalt Top Sakura Dark Red Tee

If you love all things Japan, the Spicy Brown is for you. They sell everything from Tofu Robot toys to awesome tees by Kokeshi Ink, Moki, and Tofu. The first tee that caught my eye was a new one from Kokeshi Ink called the Hawaii Sunshine Tee. Another adorable tee from Kokeshi Ink is the Sakura Dark Red Tee. The Rose Asphalt Top from Tama Neko was the last tee I found, but I like it the best. The design is beautiful and I like that it is placed on the side and not smack dab in the middle of the top. Visit them on the Spicy Brown Myspace.

Perfect Purple Police Boy Tee White Rose Print Tee Little Police Boy v-Neck Tee

Redemption Department is a ebay store, but they do us all a favor by not putting things on auction. Everything on their site is set to “Buy it Now” so you won’t have to worry about those pesky last second bidders. Their tees are a mix of emo and totalitarianism. They have an odd obsession with dictators, but I think its all in good fun. I think… My favorite tee is the Perfect Purple Police Boy Tee. I like that the print is on the back of the tee. You can get friendly with them on the Redemption Department MySpace.

Nectar Tee Eye to Eye Tee Flying Solo Tee

Rara Avis is the only company that doesn’t have a MySpace yet. This might be because they are truly a baby company. They just started and actually only have three tees. The t-shirts are much more girlie than any of the others. All the tees have a bird theme whether it is two birds in the shape of a heart or a ton of tiny birds flying together with one flying in the opposite direction. Not only are the tees very pretty, Rara Avis donates a portion of each sale to RARE Conservation, a national conservation organization.

Anchor & Rope Tee Ship Tee Boombox Tee

The last t-shirt company is Six Barrel Hooliguns. If you’re as big of a music fan as I am, you’ve probably heard of them. There was a Hooliguns booth on this years Taste of Chaos and there will be one on Warped this year too. Even though I love the music connection, their tees also get me all giddy. I love the Rope & Anchor Tee and their Ship Tee because they obviously feed my pirate obsession. I also like the Boombox Tee. It reminds me of an early 90s, Kid and Play sort of thing. You can check them out on the Hooliguns MySpace and see all their rad music friends.
