It seems, starting a new year and new internship has left me nothing less than neglectful to PRC. I have to get better at balancing new activities with old activities. It’s like this song I learned in grade school, “make new friends, but keep the old…” I’ve always struggled with that concept, when I move I cut pretty much all ties, unfortunately or fortunately depending on the ties.

I also have an odd severing tendency when it comes to jewelry. For some odd reason, I can’t bring myself to obsess over more than one type of jewelry at a time. During my last years of high school, I love large chandelier earrings. Then, after making the move from the Mid-West to the East Coast, I canned the earring and draped myself in necklaces, but now I’m starting to lust after over-sized rings for the new year.

Perhaps that is my unconscious way of self-censoring. I’ve never liked delicate jewelry, only the big and bold— an assume repercussion of growing up in the “super-size it” glory days— and, without some sort of censoring mechanism I might end up looking like I was attacked by Claire’s.

When looking for original jewelry, Etsy seemed like the obvious place to head, and lucky I did because options were found and a new jewelry obsession was secured. For less than $20 each I could satiate my urge to either be extremely art nouveu (Glint) or sweet an girlie (Heatherly Designs) all while sporting a great cocktail ring.

Now the trick is to balance my long-time love of layered necklaces with my flavor of the week, cocktail rings. Tricky, tricky!

The other day, I saw a fantastic documentary about Peter Beard on the Sundance Channel. The documentary, Peter Beard: Scrapbooks from Africa and Beyond, contained everything from Azzedine Alaïa campaign shoots in Africa to home footage containing the aftermath of Beard’s run-in with a not so happy elephant— broken ribs and internal bleeding don’t seem too fun when you’re two hours from a hospital. The documentary also captured a great exhibit he did in Paris using double exposure and a giant Polaroid.

Though all of Beard’s art is utterly original and interesting— they’re bound to when layered with original african paintings and his own blood— the double exposure prints were my favorite. The over-lapping pictures give the pieces a very spectral quality and make even the simplest photos infinitely more interesting.

Now, double exposure can be created very easily using photoshop and other photo-editting tools, making the results slightly less captivating than something created by Beard— though, that goes for most art and photography compared to Beard’s— but, searching the net does provide a couple cool photographers whose multiple exposures, if stumbled upon while surfing the net, will definitely make your day a bit more inspired.

Two such young photographers, Ren Rox and Cecilia a.k.a. *ailicec*, I found on while sifting through the infinite abyss that is Flickr.com. Both primarily create multiple exposures the old fashion way but also prove there’s nothing wrong with tinkering around the shop. Check out all their Flickr collections by clicking the photos below.

Tomorrow’s Christmas, and the hardest thing for most people to do is to dress festively without looking like a complete and utter joke. In the December issue of Elle, Joe Zee gives a lot of great tips, and I took that and decided to create my own Christmas outfit.

That skirt is one of my favorites for the winter because it’s really basic and is heavy because unfortunately, the north-eastern winters get a bit chilly— what an understatement. I actually wore that skirt to two interviews I had a couple of weeks ago. One was for PR Consulting and the other was for Tractenberg & Co. Though I didn’t get both internships, I was asked to be an intern in the fashion department of T&C. I’m so excited to start!

The shirt is a satin boudoir style dress from Victoria’s Secret. I doubt I will ever wear it as a dress, but it’s perfect for tucking in and wearing as a shirt. The bright red color was perfect for bringing the Christmas spirit to the outfit, and the hoodie kept things really simple because hanging out with my family doesn’t need an extremely dressy look.

I’ll be posting throughout the holidays.

Two years ago, this fashion blog sprouted out of my boredom and a little nudge in the right direction from my sister.

This post was going to be about what extravagant presents I’d love to receive for my 2nd ‘Blogiversary’, but I just couldn’t seem to write that because in truth there is only one impossible present I truly want and, unfortunately, will never get.

I’ve thought of writing about this for the past two months, but I haven’t exactly been able to find the words to say it. I’m also not even sure if I should, or even want, to be writing about this, but as I have said before, its my blog. So, here I go.

A little over two months ago, my sister, Blythe Ashleigh died of what is called Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). It was the most terrify, surreal moment of my life, and I still find myself forgetting I don’t have to pick her up from the train station every now and then.
I’m not writing this for sympathy or empathy. Hearing people tell me how sorry they are is becoming one of my biggest pet peeves. The fact is, she was 23, caring, smart, hilarious, and beautiful— things like that aren’t supposed to happen to people like her, but when they do, you tend to change.

Blythe was always my champion even when she didn’t completely agree, but now I have to be my own champion. I have to be strong for myself and fight my own battles. I have to make my life what I want it to be without her pushing me and telling me not to be scared. Pink Rock Candy wouldn’t be in existence without Blythe telling me to write about fashion if I can’t actually study it in school. The initial plan was for both of us to write, but she was always too busy being a grown up to sit a computer for hours and fiddle with a blog. Even without writing she read it everyday, she loved it because I loved it, and she was constantly informing me of my grammatical errors. I’d scoff at her about nit-picking, and then rush to a computer to fix them. Now, PRC seems like the last thing we still have together, the last thing that will forever be ours.

I don’t know if there is an afterlife. I don’t know if she’s watching over me or some other family member. I don’t even know what to feel half the time. But, I do know Blythe always wanted people to follow their dreams, and would stop at nothing to help them accomplish their goals. And, I do know that in some weird way, this blog has become “part of my dreams.” Writing PRC is part of my long-term plan, and being as fickle as I am, I know Blythe would be proud that I’ve stuck with this for two years and don’t see myself stopping any time soon.

Two years ago, two sisters started this blog, only one sister truly wrote in it, but two hearts will forever be behind every word.

I’ve been up since 5:15 AM, I have three finals today and will be on campus until 8 PM. I’m completely exhausted, and have just found out silly Billy Corgan is trying to make a statement again by informing the world that Smashing Pumpkins are no longer going to put out full albums only singles because “they drag over the two singles, and skip over the rest [of the cd].”

Oh, the humanity Corgan, maybe people would listen to full albums if every song was as good as the singles. Don’t get my parents started about how “every song was great on vinyls because you couldn’t just skip over a song. You had to listen to it all, so artists really cared.”

I also found out that Gareth Pugh is doing a menswear line to be shown in January. Now guys will know the pleasure of dressing like aliens and horror creatures. I love you Pugh!

Last but not leats, I have had the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus song, “You Better Pray”, stuck in my head for at lesat 2 weeks, making me over-eager to see the guys tossing their well-coiffed heads all over my computer screen in the video:

I could deny my appreciation for Fall Out Boy, like I do my excitement for seeing Whitney Port traipse around NYC on her new show, The City, but the truth is, when it comes to music, I find it hard to call people who, at the very least, play their own instruments and write their own music a guilty pleasure. Hence the reason, I’m announcing my excitement for the release of Fall Out Boy’s new album, Folie à Deux— a title I’m not even sure they have pronounced correctly. The songs I’ve heard have been catchy and full of convoluted lyrics you love singing but can’t help question the actual meaning.

Plus, I like Patrick Stump’s voice, especially when he sings in a bluesy A Capella at the end of “W.A.M.S.”

When it comes to magazines, there are two absolute truths in my world. Truth 1, it will take a lot for me to stop flipping through while glancing at pictures and actually read an article. Truth 2, I hate limiting my magazine “reading” to just fashion magazines.

I tend to flip through everything from Vogue to AP to Highlights— only at the dentist’s office, though.

The other day, I was glancing through the new Modern Bride magazine— no, I’m not getting married— with Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway on the cover and saw the most amazing aqua dress by Milly. I fell for Milly dresses around the same time I started PRC, and it seems the girlie allure still isn’t lost on me.

The aqua, cotton voile ‘Crescent Beach’ dress is part of Milly’s ‘Cabana’ collection, which, I assume, is their clever name for the resort collection.

Though I privately scoff at women who can afford to buy from resort collections and actually take a holiday in the winter, I can’t help but adore this dress. It has a very flirty, ‘love is in the air’ feel, and I think it would be perfect for racing through the throngs of gray, black, and denim on campus or in NYC, spreading cheer to anyone who catches a glimpse of me.

It makes me want all this winter’s rain and flurries to disappear, so the sun can come out and the temperature can once again rise to at least 75 degrees. Until then, I’ll just save for the dress and dream of the warmer weather sure to come.

Even if you aren’t into rainbow-colored hair or wearing band t-shirts and tutus on a regular basis, there is something stylistically intriguing about “the scene,” and Sarah-Jane Adams, creative founder of Cause a Scene magazine knows that better than anyone. The free online mag is chock full of amazing indie designers and interesting scene personas. Earlier this week, Sarah-Jane was kind enough to answer some questions about Cause a Scene, indie websites, and Britney Spears. Read the interview after the jump.

I first heard about Cause a Scene when it was called Fashion Central magazine— during this time I was completely intrigued by Audrey Kitching’s bubblegum-colored hair— how does the name ‘Cause a Scene’ represent the magazine’s perspective better?
I know right, it’s not difficult to imagine little Disney woodland creatures living in that hair and popping out every so often and bursting into song. But your intrigue really sums up why we made the switch; Fashion Central was too broad a term to cover the fact that our readers wanted to look to the likes of Audrey for fashion inspiration, and so we changed the name to reflect this younger, edgier, more specific genre of audience that our features were attracting. The title Cause a Scene not only instantly lets everyone know what we’re all about, but creating a specifically ‘scene’ inspired publication validates the reader’s interest in that culture, and recognizes the genuine high fashion and artistic merit of the work created by many of the scene disciples.

What designer, indie or otherwise, represents the scene-meets-couture feel of Cause a Scene magazine the best?
For designer, Betsey Johnson or Heatherette, and indie, New York Couture. You can see it’s high end, but it’s not appropriate for Vogue; that’s how I’d describe much of our content!

You’re the Creative Founder of Cause a Scene, Editor-in-Chief of Flair Now magazine and celebrity style columnist at Urban World. What advice would you give to a person who wanted to break into the field of online journalism, more importantly online fashion journalism?
I’d say first and foremost, train. You need to know what you’re doing; the internet is a great tool and the opportunities for online fashion journalism are undoubtedly immense, but nothing hurts me more than 15-year-olds who run a blog with 4 readers titling themselves as Editor In Chief. (This is also true of the term ‘model’… argh!) You wouldn’t call yourself a surgeon without training or experience, so start with an English or Journalism degree, or a vocational course in fashion or pr. Then get yourself out there; working online is as much about branding as anything else. Use all the social networking sites, and introduce yourself and your work to anyone influential in the field; work generates work, so make sure you’re the person that others recommend. Online, it’s almost essential to be multi-skilled; learn Photoshop, take photographs, even model if you can, getting your foot in the door gets your name known and leads to further opportunities. I know that many people recommend writing for anywhere that will have you, but I don’t really advocate this… pitch to sites you enjoy, and that look like they’re going somewhere; always have your CV in the back of your mind when you’re approaching editors for work, and if it’s not beneficial to you, move on. And lastly, be prepared to work long hours for little to no pay for a very long time.

Who has been your favorite person to interview for Cause a Scene magazine, and why?
Playboy model Christine Dolce (aka Forbidden) When you land a spot with someone that successful it’s always a thrill, and she was genuinely so nice. And Zui Suicide (Paris Hilton’s BFF) is always hilarious!

Cause a Scene does a great job featuring the up-and-coming. What trends do you think are up-and-coming, and which ones do you think are sinking like the Titanic?
Thank you! I think pink is going to be huge for Spring; I think we might just see an anti-credit crunch look come through, with more playfulness and vibrancy than we’ve seen with the severe architectural silhouettes and somber shades of this season. And as for things I can do without, I know they’re huge right now here in the UK but I’m not really feeling wet look leggings for the simple fact that they are E.V.E.R.Y.W.H.E.R.E.

How did your intrigue in “the scene” start?
Actually my involvement in it came completely by accident. I managed to land some great spreads with prominent photographers who were dealing with the likes of Raquel and Audrey and this lead me into creating interviews and covers with them and it just progressed from there. It always feels slightly ironic to be an authority on something that is so far from my own personal style. Scene has always been more of a business move for me really, in that it was a niche that was uncatered for and I knew I could create a brand to fill it, it’s not necessarily a cultural interest that I pursue in my social life.

What’s your opinion on the term “Scene Queen”?
(Laughs) Finally this question has been turned on me, I feel like I’ve asked every ‘Scene Queen’ out there about this! I look upon it as meaning a celebrity model, usually alternative in style, who has become famous predominantly through the use of the internet. I’ve never seen it as a derogatory term, although many labeled in this way do seem to take offense at being put into that category, and look at it as implying they are some kind of band groupie or talentless wannabe. So many of the girls have told me that they hate the term or deny all knowledge of even knowing what it means, but I think it is what it is, and if that’s how you’ve become successful, embrace it, they’re all just playing characters in the scene brand anyway.

My first real clothes obsession was with a pair of black stiletto ankle boots with zippers and studs of my mom’s when I was little. Do you remember anything in particular that began your love of fashion?
What was the name of that eighties toy where there was a wheel, and you moved the sections to create new outfit combinations, and then did a brass rubbing over the top? Style-o-graph? Style-o-wheel? I need to know the answer now, someone please write in!!! (laughs)

What was your worst fashion moment?
Probably anything from the ages of 13-18. I don’t think anybody should be allowed to dress themselves or do their own makeup when they’re a teenager. I feel sorry for the Myspace generation, they’ll have so much photographic evidence of how awful they looked during their emo phase!

What’s the best fashion and/or beauty advice you’ve ever given/received?
That fake tan is evil. I’ve never come across anyone who looks better orange than they do white.

I feel like “indie” is such a broad term when using it to describe fashion because everyone has their own take on it. What does indie fashion/design/style/trends mean to you?
Definitely! It’s like ‘vintage’ or ‘alternative’, they’ve become overused to the point of losing their intended meaning. I guess the most popular definition for indie fashion is in connection to music, or as something anti-establishment, but for me the truest sense of the term is to represent grassroots fashion such as DIY crafters and independent labels and boutiques.

What are your 5 favorite indie websites?

causeascenemagazine.com: we often feature indie brands and loads of them advertise with us so you can always pick out something new and up and coming.

smashingdarling.com: this is the ultimate indie resource for me, as not only can you visit as a customer and browse from masses of sellers, but you can also pick up valuable tips and advice as a retailer via the site’s blog.

bbycks.com: If anyone wants to see the best example of self made online celebrity or indie fashion entrepreneurialism out there, Paul Griffiths is king.

Alice’s Boutique: I came across this group on Facebook and it’s a great example of indie business savvy. LCF graduate Alice creates colorful custom made bodycon dresses, and the group has received over two thousand members in under a month. Her official website is coming soon so join the group to receive details.

indiequarter.com: the most comprehensive indie fashion blog I’ve found, you will become addicted.

What new bands are you currently obsessing over?
I’m not so much one for bands but I’m loving the UK Garage scene at the moment, and the albums Paper Trail by T.I and No Point in Wasting Tears by Ironik are on constant repeat.

Old Britney, new Britney, or somewhere in between Britney (Spears that is)?
Britney and Justin together forever. That’s all I have to say on the matter!

If you could throw your dream party, what kind of party would it be and who would you invite?
It would be a Jennifer Lopez party, where everyone had to dress up as Jennifer Lopez, and I’d invite… Jennifer Lopez.

Not only does the ring mix the tom boyish double knuckle ring with girlie jeweled flowers, but at only $10 I can play with the ring all I want without worrying I’ll lose an expensive piece of jewelry.

The Sperbers never cease to impress me. They’re seasonal handbag collections are always adorable and now they’re making me want to wear rings— devastating!

If you’re in the NY area and just can’t stand paying for shipping, you can visit the Sperber sisters at their booth at The Bust Craftacular on December 14 from 10 AM to 7:30 PM at the Metropolitan Pavillion.

Last week I was fawning over the depression era fashions in The Broadway Melody (1929), and now you’ve brought Anita Page’s character in full color to the new millennium with your Pre-Fall 2009 collection. The fringe, the trumpet skirts, the fringe!

I think I’ve been dreaming of dressing like this my entire life, or at least post-princess stage on. There’s something about the perfect fringe skirt that makes you want to sashay, play with your decadent jewelry, and smoke a pipe— okay, a cigarette in a vintage cigarette holder, but a pipe is ballsier.

Oh, and thanks for mocking our current economic status with a nod to depression era fashion, it went completely unnoticed.

Bises,
Chelsea Rae

p.s. I know flappers were before The Great Depression, but those beaded shift wearing women were the same women who eventually wore the modest trumpet-skirted suits during the depression.

I know I’ve been M.I.A. of late, and I also know I haven’t done a ‘What I’m Wearing’ post in a bout forever or at least since I started school in September. So, in celebration of my return from end-of-semester-projects hell, I’m spilling about my new-ish shoes.

I say new-ish because I bought them a couple of weeks ago, but I’ve only worn them a handful of times making them almost new. Today, I wore them to school fort he first time. For some reason, being on a college campus makes me want to A) dress in jeans and only jeans until death do us part and B) forgo my love of 5” heels for comfort and practicality. I know both of the sentiments are felt worldwide, but I will admit I am adding to the frumpdom of the US— for shame, for shame!

The only good part about going frumpy for a bit is the metamorphosis that occurs when the semester begins winding down and instead of concentrating on the difference between market segmentation and target markets, I get to wake up and actually focus on what I wear.
Now, I also get to fully appreciate the new album from The Killers, Day and Age. I’ve only listened to it a couple of times since I bought it last week, but from what I’ve heard, I love it. I think my two favorite songs are “Human” and “Neon Tiger”— I’ve had the chorus of “Human” stuck in my head all day.
How do you avoid having a frumpy season or two?

Though I am a PR major, I realize the best designer tip-offs come from other bloggers and not the designer’s individual publicists. To be honest, this actually helps the designer, because as you can guess, we’re more likely to pay attention to a brand if a peer suggests it rather than a gusher-for-hire— no offense to my, hopefully, eventual colleagues. Browsing other blogs is how I found accessory designer Ashley Watson.

While reading the blog Couture Salope in October, I stumbled across a post featuring some of the most subtly-beautiful leather handbags I’d seen in quite some time. I became even more intrigued after reading that all of Ashley Watson’s accessories were made of recycled leather. The recycled leather gives the bags the soft feel and perfectly worn look of your favorite, old leather jacket.

To me, recycled leather is something like vintage fur. No extra animals were murdered to make the specific bag so it is almost 100% okay. Plus, the bag is eco-friendly without being completely made of hemp.

Though you may not be able to get the Spring ‘09 collection including the red version of the ‘Thrush’ Bag until February, you can get the ‘Thrush’ bag in black for $250 at shopfatal.com or for a bit more at their other stockists.
